Chapter 221
Vespera choked until her chest hurt. It was as if someone swung a sledgehammer into her chest. She let out an awkward laugh before turning away to ignore Dominic. He was merely displeased with Fawn arranging the date without his knowledge. It just so happened that Vespera made a poor judgment call and unintentionally became an accomplice in the arrangement. So, she ended up becoming the most convenient target for his anger. No wonder he sounded so sarcastic on the phone earlier.
Vespera sighed. Upon realizing that Roxanne and her friend were staring at her, she forced herself to smile, which came across as somewhat awkward. Dominic did not make any further sarcastic remarks. Since Vespera turned away, he did the same. As for Calven and Gerard, who had been spying on the situation the entire time, they quickly looked up at the ceiling.
At that moment, Rebecca entered the restaurant. She casually scanned the surroundings before her gaze landed on two nearby tables. Rebecca wondered if she had lost her mind. Was she seeing things or simply unlucky? Rebecca walked toward the tables in disbelief. She looked at them with a scowl, as if she were staring at a series of mathematical questions on a blackboard.
“Ms. Smyder,” Rebecca happened to walk past Dominic’s table when she suddenly heard him calling out to her. His voice was deep and magnetic. Rebecca instantly became excited and subconsciously stopped in front of Dominic, who invited her to have a seat. “Do join us.”
Rebecca faltered, “Oh.” Vespera did a double-take. She then scrutinized Rebecca. Seeing that Dominic had taken the initiative to greet Rebecca and even invited her to take a seat, Roxanne nearly…
Rebecca was tall and slender, with delicate features. She did not wear any makeup and was dressed in a dark blue tracksuit. She even looked disinterested. Was that Dominic’s type? Roxanne felt her heart might shatter from misery; Dominic barely paid any attention to her, although she had spent several hours doing her makeup. Calvert also waved at Rebecca and welcomed her warmly, “Rebecca! Do join us!”
Since there were no available seats at the other table, and Calvert was being so welcoming, Rebecca decided to take a seat with Dominic for now.
“Rebecca, you look rather pale. What happened?”
“Oh, let’s not talk about it! I had some watermelon at the rest stop next to the highway and ended up having diarrhea – I thought I was going to die! Maybe they put some laxatives in the watermelon!”
“Speaking of watermelon, I once took a slice of it from the fridge. I think I almost lost consciousness in the bathroom that day. Later, I found out that the watermelon had been in the fridge for almost a week.”
“You like living on the edge, don’t you? One week! You’re lucky you didn’t die from diarrhea!”
Rebecca and Calvert started exchanging their stories of getting diarrhea after having watermelon. She did not seem ladylike at all. Roxanne was stunned. How could Rebecca be so unfiltered with her words? Roxanne observed Dominic and was shocked that he didn’t seem upset at all. Was he not disgusted?
To make things worse, Dominic even spoke gently to Rebecca, showing his concern for her. “Watch what you eat, and take care of yourself.”
Rebecca knew that Dominic was being a jerk, so she replied coldly, “Thanks for your concern, Mr. Reid.”
Dominic asked with a smile, “What brings you to Ashford, Ms. Synder?”
Rebecca retorted, “Mr. Reid, don’t worry about what I’m doing. You should focus on your date, or she might misunderstand us.”
“Who told you I’m here for a date? Oh, it must be my silly secretary. She likes to make things up and smear my reputation. Just ignore her.”
“6?” Although Dominic was talking in circles, Rebecca instantly picked up on his underlying meaning.
“You’re not here on a date? Did we really misunderstand you? Really?” Rebecca couldn’t help but glance at Roxanne.
Dominic answered earnestly, “I’m not on a date.”
Rebecca instantly softened at his firm answer. She leaned forward and whispered, “I knew it, you’re not a jerk. But…”
Rebecca gestured at Vespera at the other table with her chin before covering her mouth with her hand. “Did you ask Vespera to deal with your date?” Dominic smiled without a word.
