Chapter 235

Rebecca suddenly exclaimed, “Why are you so scared of Dominic? It’s not like he eats people.”

Jade lowered her head so much that her hat brim completely shadowed her face. Her voice came out barely audible. “I don’t know. There’s just something about him.”

“I get this weird, uneasy feeling like he’s not like us at all.”

Rebecca studied her for a moment, her eyes thoughtful and steady. Then, she nodded without hesitation. “Alright. I’ll send him off for you.”

Back inside the house, she casually explained that they wanted to take a walk around and soak up the countryside atmosphere. Her tone clearly suggested that Dominic could head back to his friend’s place.

Dominic checked the time. “Yeah, I should get going.”

As he stood, he leaned toward Vespera. His lips brushed against her ear as he murmured something too soft for anyone else to hear. Her ears turned red from the…

Dominic chuckled, gently ruffled her hair, and said with a teasing tone, “Alright, I’m off. Don’t go getting into trouble.”

With that, he turned and left.

Only after he was out of sight did Rebecca explain what Jade had discovered—three suspicious locations Tamara had mentioned.

They all stood up immediately and headed out.

On the way, Jade moved beside Vespera and asked curiously, “Vespera, what did Mr. Reid whisper to you?”

Vespera’s smile was playful, her eyes twinkling with a teasing glint. “That’s between him and me. You want in on our secrets too?”

Jade instantly caught the implication. “Oh. He was flirting with you. Sorry, I shouldn’t have asked.”

Vespera gave her a light laugh. “It’s fine.”

The group checked out two locations. At first glance, they seemed like good matches. But in the end, something always felt off.

By then, it was already 6:00 pm. They headed for the third location, which was a bit farther out compared to the first two.

As the car continued down the road, the weather took a sudden turn. The wind picked up sharply. Dragonflies skimmed low across the fields. Dark clouds rolled in like a heavy curtain, and then came the downpour—fast and merciless.

Everything beyond the windshield turned a blinding white, visibility dropping to near zero.

Vespera told Calvert to pull over onto a small side road to wait it out.

Through a thick rain, a striking red Cayenne slowed as it appeared from the other side of the melon field.

Rebecca gasped. “That’s Tina’s car!”

Vespera leaned forward, peering through the windshield. On the parallel road, just past rows of melon vines, she spotted the unmistakable red Cayenne. “It really is!”

Their conversation drifted over to Jade, and her expression showed stunned surprise. “Wait. You know Tina? You knew the classmate I mentioned was…”

Rebecca quickly turned back to her, calm and direct. “At this point, there’s no need to keep anything from you.”

Her expression was serious as she told her everything. “I’m not Quentin’s cousin. We’re in the same situation as you; here to find evidence that she’s…”

Jade’s eyes widened in surprise. But it didn’t take long for her to accept what she had heard.

“We’ve both been harmed by Tina, and we…”

Her gaze fell to the rain-streaked windshield and the red Cayenne glowing like fresh blood beyond it. Her voice was low and cold, something heavy and lifeless settling over her.

“Then we need to catch her and make her pay for what she’s done.”

Outside, the rain began to let up. The red Cayenne picked up speed.

Vespera asked Calvert to follow closely behind.

After a while, Calvert spoke up, “This is the direction we were headed anyway. I think we’re finally on the right track.”

Vespera and Rebecca didn’t say a word. Jade remained quiet as well. Half in the loop and half out, Byron chose not to say anything.

The sound of Vespera’s phone vibrating in her palm broke the silence.

She didn’t check immediately. A few minutes later, she unlocked it and opened the message.

It was from Felicia. “Clare’s mother’s family home is in the countryside of Aldord. It had been abandoned, but a few years ago, Claire decided to renovate the house. She even bought a large piece of land nearby and turned it into an orchard.”

Along with the message, there was a map showing the orchard’s location.

Vespera didn’t reply. She closed the phone, staring out at the sky, which had already darkened.

On the highway, a black Ghost glided down the road.
