Chapter 241

Vespera, Rebecca, and Calvert remained silent. Vespera realized almost instantly that it had been Lake who had called the police. His showing up here meant only one thing—Felicia must have blown everything. Felicia had traced them to the Enchand and learned that Claire and Tina had been in Ashton. She pieced enough together to orchestrate the drama. And she brought Lake with her, just to stir the pot even more.

“Vespera.” Luke’s voice was soft—almost inaudible. That, when he saw her expression shift from shock to complete indifference, instantly, I'd have hit him like a porch to the chest. On the other hand, Claire looked like she had just seen a ghost. “Luke, quickly! Come check on Tina. Vespera, I… she’s hurt. We need to get help.”

Vespera turned her gaze sharply, her eyes icy. She, Rebecca, and the others all gave Claire a look that said, “Is she seriously under the illusion Lake is here to save them?” Even if Claire didn’t know Felicia and Luke hated Tina, the fact that the police had arrived so swiftly meant the call had been made over thirty minutes ago. This also meant Luke had arrived while Tina was still being beaten down by Jade, and he had watched it all happen without lifting a finger.

Luke looked down at Tina and Jade, who sprawled on the ground, and gave a cold, hollow laugh. “That’s not what I saw. And I’d suggest you stop making baseless accusations.”

Claire tried to speak. “Wh—?” Her so-called future son-in-law didn’t speak up for her. The police discovered the two injured and unconscious girls, and without asking any questions, they shouted, “Get them to the hospital, now!”

Claire tried to follow them, but an officer blocked her. “You’re not going anywhere. You need to come with us to the police station.”

“Luke—” Calar turned to him, still clinging to her last shred of hope. “Please go with Tina. She’ll be scared if she wakes up alone.”

“Sorry, I can’t leave either. As a witness to the attempted homicide, I need to give my statement,” Luke said.

“Attempted homicide… Witness.” Those words chilled Claire to the bone. Her blood felt like ice in her veins; his tone even colder than before. It would have been one thing if it were just some random bystander, but he was supposed to be marrying her daughter. Unaware even of carrying his chill...

She couldn’t understand how he could stay so calm through all of this. He just stood there and did nothing. It felt impossible to comprehend.

“Luke, she’s carrying your child! How can you be this heartless?”

Luke’s tone was cold and detached. “You want me to take the knife for her? You’re here as well. Why don’t you step in instead?”

“I was tied up at the time!” Claire retorted.

“Tied up? So you’d just stand by if you weren’t?” Luke mocked. “Then why don’t you try stabbing yourself first? If you’re brave enough to do that, I’ll believe you.”

“You!” Claire was so furious, she almost choked on her anger. Luke’s expression remained blank, his cold demeanor sending a chill through the moment. His indifference was unending, leaving everyone, including the police, speechless.

Vespera couldn’t help but click her tongue, watching the scene unfold. A man who only loved himself could feign affection and even fool himself into believing his act. That was because he could control everything and didn’t care about the one he loved. But once things were beyond his control and threatened his most crucial interests, he was willing to abandon anyone.

Luke’s gaze shifted toward her. His eyes softened with what seemed like a silent promise. “I would never treat you that way, never.”

Vespera smirked. She thought, “Here we go again, another show of fake affection.”

Just then, the police spoke up, “All of you, come with us to the station.”

“Hold on, we have vital information to report,” Rebecca said, stepping in. She told the officers about the buried bodies by the pond.

Claire’s bloodshot eyes widened in panic. She declared vehemently, “No, no! She’s lying! Don’t listen to her.”

Rebecca pulled up the video showing Claire and Tina burying the bodies, accompanied by Denton. Despite Claire’s frantic denials and desperate attempts to block the truth, the police acted swiftly. They grabbed tools and headed straight for the tree in the center of the pond.

Claire collapsed to the ground in defeat.

Chapter 241

No matter what she did to them. It was over. Everything was over.

“What now? What do I do?” Claire’s mind raced, searching for a way out. She quickly thought of Selena. She could help. After all, she managed to cover up for the Locke family. She could find a way out of this.

Vespera cast a cold glance at the panicked Claire. Her reaction confirmed it… It was over for her.
