Listen to this chapter:

The officers had pieced together everything Felicia had done. The two female officers who interrogated her had been so disgusted they wanted to spit on her.

She sits in the interrogation room, her face alternating between red and pale from humiliation. She answered every question honestly, but she had never experienced this.

Regret crashed over her like a tidal wave; she had assumed the heiress of the Sole family wouldn’t have been a bad person. To her, Tina would have made a great daughter-in-law.

Only God knew that Tina was more ruthless than the devil himself. After everything she had done, she still expected her to take the fall. There was no way Felicia would have ever let her into the Munor family.

While they were interrogated, lawyers from the Munoz and Sole families had arrived at the station. They were there to bail them out.

Rebecca had seen this coming and set up camp at the police station. She fought back against their lawyers, presenting detailed evidence and documentation of the crimes committed. As the representation of the victim, she relayed Vespera’s requests.

Ultimately, that bitch Tina wouldn’t escape accountability. As for Luke, he wouldn’t be a free man until eight the next morning.

It had been 2:00 am when Rebecca drove to Vespera’s apartment from the police station.

Vespera had woken up after only a few hours of sleep. She had changed out of her red dress, removed her pop, and started to pack her luggage for her trip.

“I brought supper. Come have some,”

The two of them sat on the balcony, eating fried chicken while drinking beer. Vespera caressed the glass in her hand and gazed up at the stars in the night sky.

“Someone told me that I should be happy after getting my revenge. I guess I should be. This does feel great!” she exclaimed before downing her beer and exhaling a long breath of relief.

Rebecca looked at her with a smile. In her heart, she felt sorry for her. This marriage had stripped her bare and had nearly stolen years of her life.

She had finally made it through and had wanted to say goodbye on her terms, but Luke had refused to grant her even that. He had forced her into madness and to everything she had endured.

“Vera, would you still believe in love after this?”

The question had been for Vespera, but Rebecca asked because she doubted it herself. Her concept of love wavered. No matter how beautiful and intelligent a woman was, it seemed that betrayal and pain had always awaited her in the end.

Vespera held her glass close to her arms and stared into the absolute silence of the night.

“I can’t shut myself off from the world just because of one bad experience. Even so, I’d be scared. If love tried to get close, I’d stay away.”

Rebecca nodded in agreement. From her words, it was clear she no longer believed in love. They finished off every last drop of beer. Wrapped in blankets, the two drunks conned up and talked for hours about what made them happy and what didn’t.

They talked about the past, present, and future. It was mixed with tears and laughter. In the end, Vespera fell asleep with Rebecca in her arms.

When morning came, Vespera was dressed in her trench coat. She pushed her luggage into the living room. Rebecca gave her a big hug before saying their goodbyes. “Don’t worry, and enjoy the trip. Leave the rest to me. When you get back, the divorce certificate will be issued, and it’ll all be officially over with Luke.”

“I know,” she said with a nod.

She had decided to stick with her original plan to travel. Even though it felt selfish to dump everything on Rebecca, she needed a break from reality. Anywhere but here would do. Her flight was at 8:00 am. Rebecca wanted to take her to the airport, but a call from the police station stopped her. They told her Luke had been cleared of suspicion and would be free to leave once the paperwork was processed in exactly half an hour.

“Vera, something came up. You should grab a cab. Have a safe trip.”

She didn’t explain and left in a hurry after giving her another hug. No matter what it took, even if she had to cling to Luke’s leg or throw herself at him, her mission for the day was to keep him there until the clock struck eight.

Vespera left the apartment with her luggage in hand. While waiting for a cab at the building entrance, an unknown number flashed on her phone screen. She stared at it; her gut told her she was better off ignoring it.

Just then, a Maybach with a silver route drove out of the neighborhood and stopped right in front of her. The driver’s side window rolled down, and Raymond greeted her.

“Ms. Gildon, where are you headed?”

“I’m going to the airport,” she answered honestly, lifting her head in surprise.

“Perfect, we’re on the way there as well.”
