The room, and even an indoor golf simulator, occupied a significant portion of the space. The second floor was fully dedicated to entertaining guests, featuring a swimming pool, a karaoke lounge, a home theater, and a game room. Everything here was designed for the ultimate relocation experience.
Gerard informed Vespera that they were commonly playing poker in the game room. Vespera couldn't help but smirk—high-stakes poker was certainly a favored pastime for them. They found a seat and grabbed a few desserts, passing the time as they waited.
An hour later, Dominic’s call came through, summoning them to join him. Vespera and Gerard headed straight to the game room. The air was thick with the scent of cigars.
Around the oval poker table, wealthy businessmen relaxed in their chairs, some celebrating their winnings, others sighing over their losses. Stacks of chips towered in front of them, while a beautiful dealer shuffled and dealt the cards. Calls of “call,” “raise,” and “fold” created a scene of lively competition.
Waners glided through the room, offering trays of fine wine, champagne, and cigars. The air was filled with the sounds of indulgent conversation. Dominic, however, was a stark contrast to the others. He wasn’t smoking, and aside from a glass of champagne at his side, he seemed completely unbothered—almost as though he existed in a different reality from the rest. Judging by the growing stack of chips in front of him, he had been winning steadily.
Seated beside him, Kancy appeared a bit tipsy. She rested her head on her hand, her eyes unfocused. “She’s had too much to drink. Help her outside,” Dominic instructed calmly. Vespera and Gerard stepped forward to assist him.
“Treating,” Nancy muttered, brushing their hands away. They tried again, but she swatted their hands away. “Ms. Acosta,” Gerard hesitated, clearly unsure about handling her. Thinking it might be easier since they were both women, Vespera reached out and placed an arm around Nancy’s waist, intending to help her up.
“Prick! What do you think you’re doing?” Nancy reacted as though she’d been shocked, shoving Vespera away. Thankfully, Gerard was quick to catch her before she could fall. “Quiet, guard,” Vespera paused for a moment. A tense silence settled over them. Dominic’s expression darkened, his game cold. Without a second thought, he stood and lifted Nancy from her seat.
Vespera maintained her composure, though she wasn’t entirely sure who the command had been meant for. Since Gerard hadn’t responded, it was clear the task had fallen to her. Without another word, Dominic escorted Nancy out of the game room.
Gerard shot Vespera a concerned glance. He knew she wasn’t used to handling situations like this. Maybe he should step in. But before he could say anything, Vespera had already slid into Dominic’s seat. She glanced at her hole cards, then looked at the community cards spread across the table.
If she wanted to play it safe, she could fold every round. That would guarantee no loss. But she wasn’t just playing for herself; she was filling in for Dominic. Folding would be a humiliation. Despite this, winning would be a true reprieve. She quickly devised a strategy in her mind. Outwardly, she remained calm and composed, projecting the aura of a skillful player.
The game continued for over half an hour. At first, Vespera played cautiously—checking, folding, and calling modest bets. When she had a strong hand, she raised carefully, keeping her moves measured and unassuming. But as the game progressed, she began to get more into the rhythm of it. Her bets grew bolder, especially after a few wins.
When she noticed the possibility of hitting a royal flush, she couldn’t help but get caught up in the excitement, her breathing growing shallower. Gerard’s anxiety escalated. He thought to himself, “Ms. Gildon, if you lose this hand, even selling yourself to Mr. Reid won’t cover the debt! He told you to fill in, not to bet away your…”
“Ms. Gildan, why don’t you check on Mr. Reid? Let me handle this,” Grand suggested, his smile strained. “No business—just play,” He cut her off sharply, his tone leaving no room for argument. Vespera hesitated, her eyes lingering on the cards before she finally rose from her seat.
As she walked out, several wealthy men couldn’t help but follow her with their gaze, their eyes dark with desire. She was stunning—sharp, captivating features and a figure that was both elegant and alluring. None of them had expected her to play with such confidence. The possibility of securing her number and arranging a tryst quickly overshadowed any lingering frustration from their losses. After all, she was just a secretary. Surely, Dominic wouldn’t keep her all to himself.
Vespera stepped out of the game room, still mulling over Gerard’s words. She couldn’t help but laugh quietly to herself. Dominic was with Nancy right now—only a fool would interrupt them at this moment, but deep down, she knew that was just Grand’s excuse.
Chapter 41
She grabbed a bottle of water and took a sip as she made her way toward the stairs that led to the third deck. Her mind felt a little cloudy. A bit of fresh air might clear things up. As she stepped onto the deck and began walking toward the round couch, she turned her head—only to be caught off guard by the unexpected sight before her. Dominic’s back was to her, and Nancy stood on tiptoe, her arm draped around his neck, as if they were in the middle of a kiss….
Vespera gasped, choking on her water.
