Chapter 74
“Mr. Reid, should we go and help Ms. Gilldon?” Raymond asked as the car’s partition rose. He didn’t care if he was scolded by Dominic. He was eager to help. Gerard wasn’t as bold as Raymond, but he chimed in as well. It didn’t feel right to leave her there, sitting alone while everyone was watching.
Dominic glanced at them briefly, raising an eyebrow. “If you want to help, then help. Don’t make it sound like I’m the villain here.”
That was enough for them. Raymond turned the car around. However, before he could reach Vespera, a white BMW had already driven up and parked in front of her. The car pulled over to the side. A woman wearing a striking red business suit stepped out. She paired the suit with black trousers and a black blouse, creating a sleek, minimalist look.
“Did you end up in a wheelchair? Did Lake lose his mind and try to break your legs so you couldn’t run away?”
She briskly walked up to Vespera and asked, “How did—”
Vespera rolled her eyes slightly. “Don’t let your imagination run wild.”
“I’m not the crazy one. Aren’t you the one going crazy?” Rebecca raised an eyebrow.
“Sometimes, a little craziness pays off,” Vespera said, smiling like someone who had just successfully executed a plan.
Rebecca chuckled slightly and pushed the wheelchair toward her car. “Just hope it doesn’t go too far. Tina is like a ticking time bomb.”
Vespera’s eyes darkened for a moment. “Even if I don’t provoke her, and even if we’ve already fought with the Sowle family and sent her to prison, as long as she’s alive, she’ll still be able to manipulate others and stir up trouble.”
“It’s better to make use of her. She’s fighting for the man I don’t want. Isn’t this just another way to get what I want?”
Rebecca was silent, sensing the calculated shift in Vespera’s demeanor. She helped Vespera into the car, placed the wheelchair in the trunk, and drove away from the airport. The car behind them also started moving.
Raymond looked confused at the scene unfolding. “Could Ms. Gildon have known that Lake would leave her, so she had her friends come pick her up in advance?”
Gerard replied, “It’s probably just a coincidence.”
It was impossible to predict that Tina would cause a scene at the airport—she wasn’t some kind of fortune teller.
“Maybe. She just didn’t want to go back with Luke. She probably called her friend ahead of time.”
Raymond nodded. “That is possible,” he agreed.
The two of them looked at the rearview mirror at the same time, as if checking whether Dominic found them annoying, yet curious to know his thoughts on the situation. Dominic closed his eyes, showing a clear lack of interest in discussing it any further.
Two cars, one in front and one behind, drove in the same direction from the airport. They traveled halfway into the city, passed through five red lights, and made three turns before Rebecca finally noticed the Bentley trailing them.
Vespera had been dozing off since she got in the car. That little scene from earlier must have drained her energy. Rebecca kept an eye on the car behind them, her concern growing as they drove on.
Ten minutes later, as they neared the community, Rebecca realized the Bentley was still behind them. If it weren’t for the fact that the car was a Bentley Mulsanne, she would have wondered if Tina had sent someone to silence them. No way would a hitman be driving a luxury car like that.
As they were about to enter the community, Rebecca realized in shock that the car was still following them. She quickly shook Vespera awake. “Vera, wake up…” she urged.
“Mmmm? Are we there?” Vespera woke up, glancing outside the window. She noticed they were already at the community entrance and rolled down the window for facial recognition. The gates began to open.
Rebecca drove through, wide-eyed and nervously saying, “The car behind us has been following us. Wait, how did they get in? Do they live in this community too?”
“What?” Vespera said, becoming more alert. She looked behind the car, confused. She thought, “Walt, didn’t we just arrive? How are they—”
Rebecca panicked. “Maybe we should turn around!”
“No need. That’s my new boss’s car,” Vespera replied. How are they still behind us?
