Tina collapsed by the roadside, staring at the barely visible dot in the distance. Her eyes ignited with twisted jealousy and near-mad resentment; she hated Vespera so much she wanted to tear her to pieces. She had spent countless efforts to keep Like by her side, just for a few days, only for him to return to Vespera again. They went home together, which seemed to be an indication of reconciliation.
No! Absolutely not! Lake belonged to her, and she had to win him back!
Near the roadside trees, an inconspicuous business car tailed Luke’s car. Three minutes later, Dominic received a voice message on his phone: “Ms. Gildon has been taken by her husband. I’m still following them. Do you need me to intercept his car and…?”
Dominic furrowed his brows upon hearing that. He pondered for a few seconds and replied, “Keep following. Luke’s state of mind had always been unpredictable; any rash move could escalate the risk.” The other side responded to his order with a thumbs-up emoji.
While on the highway, Vespera began to realize that the speedometer had approached 87 miles per hour. Instead of slowing down, the speed continued to increase dangerously. Her heart pounded as she clutched her seatbelt, forcing herself to calmly reason with him. “Can you slow down a bit?”
Luke’s expression remained indifferent, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. “Are you scared? I thought you weren’t afraid of anything.”
Vespera was speechless; she could only silently curse him under her breath. Yet, no matter how furious she was, she knew better than to argue at a time like this. Forcing a smile, she said, “We only have one life, and I cherish mine. You should cherish yours too.”
While trying to stay as calm as possible, she even added, “Life is a long journey. Everything will pass. Don’t get agitated, and don’t act impulsively.” Her words sounded awfully awkward, like a poorly recorded motivational speech.
Luke suddenly jerked the wheel, swerving off the straight highway onto a narrow side road. Vespera was barely holding on; her heart almost leaped out of her chest. She took a deep breath and glanced out the window. They were on a road that was barely wide enough for two cars to pass. Both sides of the surroundings were towered with trees. The sky soon gradually darkened.
