Chapter 105
Feeling Lucasโ quiet care, Aurora couldnโt pretend she wasnโt moved. But then, she thought of his memoโhis so-called true love.
And just like that, her mood dipped for reasons she couldnโt quite explain. She didnโt even understand why she felt this way. She thought of that quiet, hidden affection sheโd kept buried deep in her heartโnever spoken aloud and never given the chance to be known.
Lucas, meanwhile, stood behind her, eyes lowered, treating each strand of her hair as if it were something rare and precious. His movements were careful, focused, as though nothing else in the world mattered. The same hands that signed million-dollar contracts were now drying her hair with a gentleness she hadnโt expected.
If Desmond saw this, heโd probably think hell had just frozen over.
By the time her hair was fully dry, Aurora had sorted out her tangled thoughts. No matter what, Lucas was her husband now. As long as he didnโt cross a line, she wasnโt going to interfere with his private affairs. But there were still boundariesโbasic dignity that needed to be maintained.
That thought brought a question to her lips. Curiosity edged into her voice. โBy the way, how did you find me today?โ
Sheโd truly thought the worst was going to happen when those men had pinned her down. She could hardly move, and for a moment, she really believed she might not make it. She hadnโt expected him to show up like some kind of guardian angel at the very last moment.
Lucas paused, then said, โI was waiting for you downstairs at the office. When I asked the front desk, they told me youโd already left.โ
โWhen I couldnโt reach you by phone, I knew something was wrong.โ
The memory of that moment still made his jaw clench. His fists curled slightly at the thought.
He wasnโt going to let those men off easily.
โI see,โ Aurora murmured, the pieces falling into place. She wasnโt surprised anymore.
โWhat are you going to do with those guys?โ she asked, glancing at him.
Lucas turned to her, watching her closely, wanting to know her answer first. If Aurora wanted them gone, just one word from her and Lucas would take care of it.
She thought for a moment, then finally shook her head. โLeave it. Hand them over to the police and let the legal process take its course.โ
After all, they didnโt succeed. Going through proper channels would be enough.
That said, life behind bars wouldnโt be easyโnot with the quiet grudge she still held. She wasnโt some kindhearted saint.
Lucas gave a small nod, running the comb gently through her hair, understanding her unspoken decision. โAlright. Iโll take care of it.โ
Aurora didnโt say anything more. Judging by how quickly the police had shown up earlier, she could tell Lucas had his own ways of handling things. Since that was the case, she didnโt need to get involved. Those petty thugs werenโt worth her time. She had more important things to focus on.
Once her hair was mostly dry, Aurora lay down on the bed. Seeing this, Lucas reached over and switched off the lights, then lay down beside her. His arm slipped around her waist, making her body tense instinctively. She almost pushed him away.
But before she could say a word, Lucas spoke first. โRelax. Just sleep.โ
โAre you going to work tomorrow? Or do you want to rest at home?โ
Aurora shook her head, reluctant but firm. โNo need. Iโll go to work as usual tomorrow. Itโs not like I was actually hurt.โ
After saying that, she waited for a response, but none came. Assuming heโd already fallen asleep, she started to settle in herself.
Just then, a low, solemn voice rumbled behind her.
โI promise. This will be the last time.โ
The words struck her hard. She knew exactly what Lucas meant.
