Given her usual temperament, this banquet probably wouldn’t have even happened. Who knew what Grace had offered her to make her agree this time? Aurora was a little curious, but she also knew some things were better left alone. She understood the saying about curiosity killing the cat.
When Jason saw her coming out, he nodded in greeting. Aurora responded with a smile. As they passed each other, she suddenly asked, “Do you know how my mother got Tessa to agree?”
Jason stiffened instantly. He quickly waved his hands. “Miss Walton, I don’t know anything. I’m just an employee. You’re putting me in a difficult spot.”
Aurora gave a soft laugh. “What are you so afraid of? I only asked a simple question. I never said what it was about. Are you confessing to something on your own?”
Jason flinched, unable to meet her gaze. With just a few well-placed words, Aurora could draw out exactly what she needed. And she hadn’t even said much.
Realizing that, the weight on his chest eased a little. His eyes shifted slightly as he replied with practiced ease, “Miss Walton, I don’t understand what you mean. I’ve only said what I’m supposed to know. As for anything else, I truly don’t know.”
Aurora cursed inwardly–no wonder he worked so closely with Grace. He’d clearly mastered the art of speaking.
“Alright, I’ve got nothing else. Go back to work.”
“Yes, Miss Walton.” Jason’s tone toward her was nothing but respectful.
He was well aware of the weekend banquet. In just a few days, the company would have a new head, and he knew perfectly well whose position would matter most.
As for Tessa, her shares were nothing more than a minor detail–hardly worth worrying about.
After Aurora left, she set the Hayes family matter aside. Looking at the words Hayes Enterprises, she couldn’t help but recall Grace’s earlier decision. She never would have thought her own mother would be such a saint. After everything that had happened, she could still get along with them, even leaving them a way to survive–helping Hayes Enterprises pull through their crisis. What exactly was Grace aiming for? Aurora truly couldn’t understand.
But it didn’t matter anymore. Since Grace already had her own arrangements for the Hayes family, there was no need for her to get involved. Her mother wasn’t senile–she knew exactly what she was doing.
Aurora’s lips curved slightly when she thought about Joseph. She might as well have some fun with this clown. His girlfriend had opened a studio and was already planning to move overseas, yet he was still clinging on like a fool. The thought alone amused her.
She had only been out of commission for a month, and already there had been so many little schemes. What came next would be even more unpredictable–now that was interesting.
Over on Joseph’s side, he went home, took a hot shower, and rested for the night, then headed to work the next day as usual. Time from his father was running short. And now that Aurora was back in the Walton family, things had become even more overwhelming for him. Even Judy, who had always stood firmly on his side, had now vanished without a trace. For the moment, Joseph felt utterly drained.
