How had he never noticed before that Daniel was such a two-faced man?
Joseph snapped back quickly, โI already said Iโm willing to let the past go. But if you want me to truly drop my anger, youโll have to give me twenty percent of the profits.โ
โMr. Hunt, twenty percent is out of the question,โ Daniel replied, deliberately toying with him.
โThen how much are you willing to give?โ Joseph frowned, irritation rising.
This time, Daniel had been the one to reach out to him. So, what if he set a few conditions? Wasnโt that only fair?
But Danielโs tone stayed leisurely. โNot only will there be no profit concessions, but I wonโt be giving you the project at all.โ
Josephโs brows furrowed, but Danielโs answer came firm and unyielding. โBecause I never intended to work with you on this project in the first place.โ
Anger edged into Josephโs voice. โDaniel, what exactly do you mean by that?โ He didnโt even bother with the formal Mr. Lewis anymore. The patience heโd been feigning collapsed in an instant.
Daniel sneered inwardly. No wonder Lucas didnโt want him working with Joseph. With a man this petty, even if they struck a deal, chaos would surely follow. Of course, Lucas was a business giantโhis vision was sharp enough to see what others couldnโt.
โMr. Hunt, I couldnโt have been clearer,โ Daniel said. โThe meaning is obviousโI donโt want to work with you.โ
โAnd what about everything I gave you before?โ Joseph demanded, dragging old favors into it.
But Daniel had no patience left. โMr. Hunt, gifts in business are always reciprocal. If you insist on bringing that up, thereโs nothing more I can argue. After all, you gave them willingly. I never forced you.โ
At those words, Josephโs grip tightened painfully around his phone. Joseph ground his teeth and spat, โDaniel, do you have no shame?โ
โHey now, whatโs with the insults?โ Daniel deliberately raised his voice. โWhatever I am has nothing to do with you.โ
โSo the only reason you called me today was to disgust me?โ
At last, Joseph saw Danielโs true colors.
โNo,โ Daniel replied smoothly, โI called to tell you this project wonโt be yours. But if there are other projects in the future, I might consider you.โ
Joseph froze. So, Daniel had thought about working with him on something else. But after the things he had just blurted out, chances were slim Daniel would ever follow through.
Sure enough, Daniel continued, โBut I heard every word you just said. Clearly, youโve been harboring a lot of resentment toward me. If thatโs how you feel, why should I work with you? Better we stop contacting each other now and keep a little dignity while we can.โ He was ready to hang up.
โItโs him, isnโt it? Lucas, right?โ Joseph suddenly blurted out. โHeโs the one who told you not to work with me, isnโt he?โ
He couldnโt wrap his head around it otherwise. But the words left his mouth before he could stop them, and the moment they did, regret hit. After all, Lucas was nothing more than a so-called pretty face. How could he possibly wield that much influence?
