In an instant, whispers spread through the crowd.
Lucas, however, paid them no mind. Aurora was his wife, the woman he had chosen and loved. As long as his parents approved, nothing else mattered. The opinions of others were irrelevant, not worth even considering.
But Aurora, under so many watchful eyes, felt uneasy. She glanced around, then tugged at Lucas’ sleeve and whispered, “Lucas, don’t you feel like people are staring at us, as if they’re trying to figure something out?”
Lucas didn’t seem the least bit bothered. Even without Aurora pointing it out, he had already noticed the stares. But as the head of the Carter family, this was nothing unusual. He had faced such scrutiny countless times since childhood. Those looks couldn’t touch him, nor could they affect his life in any way. To him, they were nothing more than clowns and buzzing flies, chattering endlessly in his ear, more irritating than anything else.
But if Aurora truly minded, that was a different matter. “It’s fine. If you’re uncomfortable, I can tell them all to turn their faces away.”
Aurora was speechless. She stared at him, wondering if he might actually mean it. If he did, that would be far too strange. Her eyes widened in disbelief. “You’re serious?”
“Of course I’m serious. I’m not joking.”
Diana, standing nearby, pressed a hand to her forehead. “Aurora, don’t worry. He absolutely means it."
“That’s right, he’s never been the type to joke around. Since childhood, whatever he says, he means it, and he always takes things very seriously,” Edward added quietly from the side.
Hearing that, Aurora dared not say another word. She forced a small smile. “Don’t worry, I’ll get used to it. Since you don’t care, then why should I?”
“But I don’t want you to force yourself.” Lucas frowned. “If you feel uncomfortable, you have to tell me. If you keep it in, I’ll feel worse. Wouldn’t that defeat the whole purpose of coming to this family banquet together?”
“Relax, I can handle it. I still have to appear on shows later. If I can’t even face a few stares, then what will I do in the future? I can’t live my whole life sheltered on the path you’ve paved for me, can I?”
Her words finally sank in, and Lucas realized she was right. Diana and Edward overheard the exchange. The two shared a look, both eyes filled with quiet admiration. Aurora was truly remarkable–never arrogant or impatient, always calm and gracious with others. Anyone who came into contact with her couldn’t help but like her. Ever since that meal they shared last time, Diana had never stopped thinking about her. They had actually found such a wonderful daughter-in-law.
Edward chuckled. “Alright, tone it down a little. This is still a family banquet, and your grandfather will be arriving soon. Don’t give anyone a reason for others to laugh. Even though you’re part of the family now, your every word and action is being watched, so you mustn’t be willful.”
