Megan had always been clear about her place, so she never tried to befriend those young heirs and heiresses.

At every family banquet, she really did sit quietly in a corner with her food, or else stuck close to her parents, greeting whomever they told her to greet.

Aurora was stunned by her words.

That didn’t sound like Megan at all. With her lively personality, how could she possibly sit still at such an event?

But Megan looked truly aggrieved, lowering her head. “It’s the truth.”

Aurora let out a sigh, suddenly understanding why Megan disliked these gatherings so much.

They really were meaningless, just schemes and rivalries in disguise.

It might be called a family banquet, but in truth, it was nothing more than another way for the upper class to forge alliances.

That was how capitalists worked–wealth only ever sought more wealth. Money never flowed into the hands of the poor; all they cared about was how much they could keep for themselves.

Harsh as it sounded, it was simply the truth of society.

Aurora tried to comfort her. “It’s alright. Sit next to me later, and we’ll eat together.”

At that, Megan’s parents quickly objected. “Aurora, that won’t do!”

“Why not?”

Aurora frowned in confusion, not understanding why she couldn’t sit with her.

“This…”

Eleanor glanced around awkwardly, her face full of discomfort. She didn’t know how to explain it.

After all, their places were no longer the same. If they sat together, who knew what the other branches of the family would say?

What’s more, Aurora was now the wife of the family head–the lady of the house. Her status was worlds apart from those of the side branches.

If people noticed her sitting with them, there would be no way to explain it.

Her position now drew everyone’s attention, while they were merely a minor branch. If it became known that they were close to her, their peaceful days would be over.

Diana saw the situation clearly and gently took Aurora’s hand to explain, “The seating at the family banquet is usually arranged by Father. Changing it without permission wouldn’t be appropriate.”

Her words were tactful, smoothing things over with ease.

“Aurora, I understand you want to spend time with Megan, but once the formal dinner is over, you two can walk around together as much as you like.”

Hearing this, Aurora finally understood what they meant. Seating here carried an order of rank, and given Megan’s current status, she simply couldn’t sit beside her.

Megan shook her head and said kindly, “It’s alright, Aurora, I understand.”

Seeing that, Aurora let the matter rest. After all, this was her first time attending the banquet, and she didn’t really know the rules.

If she made a mistake, wouldn’t that only give others a reason to laugh at her?

As a newcomer, it was better to listen to the hosts–observe, listen, and learn.

Lucas reached over and rubbed her head. “Don’t worry. Do whatever you want.”
