Diana nodded solemnly. “I think you’re right. With a son like ours, only someone like Aurora could truly suit him. Aside from her, I can’t imagine who else would ever be a match.”
“It doesn’t matter now. We don’t have to worry anymore.”
Edward slipped an arm around her shoulders, and the two of them leaned close together, smiling even more as they watched Lucas and Aurora.
At last, there was no need to fret over whether Lucas would end up alone. Aurora’s presence had swept away every obstacle in his path. The striking sight of the couple standing together, so perfectly matched, made one woman clench her fists.
“Why should you have everything? Why should all the attention fall on you?” she muttered through gritted teeth. “I can’t accept this. We were born of the same mother—why is your life so blessed while mine is not?”
The speaker was Tessa. She had come to the banquet by tagging along with others. Her eyes had fallen on Lucas’ cousin, Aaron Carter, a spoiled playboy. Tessa had wrapped him around her little finger, and when she learned of the banquet, she begged Aaron to sneak her in. At first, Aaron hesitated. After all, this was a family banquet—bringing an outsider was sure to earn him a scolding if the elders found out. But Tessa had already prepared her move. She leaned in, voice dripping with temptation. “Aaron, do you still see me as an outsider?”
“You’re right. You’re not an outsider.” Completely bewitched, Aaron gave in at once. Tessa was exactly his type, and under her coaxing, he lost all sense of reason. By the time he realized what he’d done, he had already brought Tessa straight into the banquet. At this point, it was too late to back out, even if they wanted to.
Hearing Tessa muttering under her breath, Aaron quickly turned and warned, “Don’t go prying into people at the banquet. Just stay close to me and don’t cause any trouble.” As a side-branch member, he knew his place well enough. If the family head found out he had brought an outsider into the banquet, he’d be in serious trouble. He had already heard that the head of the family was a young man, about his own age. And seeing him today proved it true. Not only striking in appearance, but his abilities were far beyond what ordinary men could match. The thought made Aaron sink with frustration. He couldn’t help but wonder why the gap between people had to be so wide. They were all Carters—so why did blood from the main line and the side branches feel like worlds apart?
Tessa finally snapped out of her thoughts after hearing Aaron’s warning. She gave a small nod. “Don’t worry, I won’t cause you trouble. I know exactly what I should and shouldn’t say here.” But by the end, impatience slipped into her tone. Why did Aurora get to bask in everyone’s attention, receiving gifts from Philip himself, while she had to skulk like a rat in the shadows, watching Aurora’s happiness from afar, bound and silenced, every move dictated by someone else?
