Chapter 1396
Seeing this, Philip clutched his chest and nearly fell back, and Diana and Edward hurried forward to steady him. Edward shot Edwin a disapproving look.
โEdwin, what nonsense are you causing again? Hurry up and apologize to Dad.โ
But Edwin had no intention of apologizing. โEnough, brother, stop pretending to be the good son. Dadโs fine. Heโs tougher than I am. Nothingโs going to happen to him.โ
He refused to believe there was anything wrong with Philipโs health. Even with so many eyes on him, Edwin still acted as he pleased.
Aurora arched a brow, finding it odd. Why was this man so stubborn?
Lucas leaned close and murmured, โMy uncleโs always like this. Stay away from him. I think thereโs something off about him, and I donโt want him clashing with you.โ
โItโs fine, you donโt need to worry,โ Aurora said with a half-smile. Did Lucas really think she was as fragile as glass? She was a living person, with her own mind.
โI canโt shake the feeling he came here with an agenda. Better to keep your distance,โ Lucas said, his brows drawn tight.
It was a manโs intuition, but he couldnโt ignore itโthe way Edwinโs eyes kept sliding toward Aurora set every alarm bell ringing in his head.
Aurora, however, thought Lucas was overreacting. Nothing could possibly happen here, not at a family banquet with so many people watching. Besides, she had only met the man once. Whatever he might have in mind, he wouldnโt act on it the very first time they crossed paths. To her, Lucas was just far too on edge.
โEdwin, stop making trouble,โ Diana added firmly, her gaze sharp on him. โYour fatherโs not young anymore. His body canโt take it if you keep pushing him like this. No matter how strong he looks, repeated bursts of anger will wear him down.โ
Her words were earnest, almost pleading. The other guests exchanged uneasy glances. Though it was a family banquet, most of them rarely saw Edwin. They hadnโt expected him to behave this way, arguing so bluntly with Philip, nearly angering him into collapse. Even if he meant it as a joke, no one found it funny. After all, a real joke only worked if both sides laughed. With someone like Edwin, this was a first for them.
Edwin finally stood and checked on Philip. Seeing the old man still glaring at him, he patted his own chest.
โCome on, Diana, donโt joke with me. Look, my dadโs perfectly fine.โ
Diana was speechless. She still couldnโt figure out what went on in her brother-in-lawโs head. Sometimes he seemed normal, but other times his thinking veered so far off track no one could follow.
Philip heard his sonโs words and brushed aside Edward and Dianaโs support, slowly pushing himself upright. โEvery year itโs the same routine with you. Why is it I can never fool you with a new one?โ
โAnd how exactly do you think youโll fool me?โ Edwin gave a slight shrug. โAll of this is too old-fashioned. From where Iโm standing, itโs just outdated tricks.โ
