The first person Aurora thought of was Tessa—no one else would be that petty.
Besides, it had been a private family banquet, and such things weren’t supposed to leak. Now that it had somehow spread so easily, anyone would find it suspicious, including Aurora. She would have been surprised if there hadn’t been something shady behind it.
Grace’s face turned slightly awkward; after all, the way she found out hadn’t exactly been proper.
“You don’t need to worry about how I heard it,” she said, trying to maintain authority. “Just tell me whether it’s true or not.”
She still insisted on keeping her motherly stance.
But to Aurora, it was laughable. In Grace’s eyes, what kind of person was she exactly? Did she not even have the right to know what was going on? Thinking that, Aurora asked directly, without holding back.
Grace didn’t understand how the conversation had taken such a turn. She licked her dry lips and said, “That’s not what I meant. I just think, since we’re mother and daughter, I have the right to know. If you found out later, just like I did, then I won’t say anything more.”
“So, if I’d known earlier and kept it from you, you’d hold it against me, wouldn’t you?”
Aurora let out a cold laugh. After knowing her mother for so long, she knew exactly what kind of person she was. The fact that Grace had gone through all this trouble to meet her face-to-face could only mean one thing—she wasn’t happy that Aurora had kept Lucas’s identity from her. Or perhaps she wanted to use his position to talk about something. Could it be that the Walton Corporation was facing some kind of problem and needed Lucas’ help? In an instant, Aurora’s thoughts began to race, forming conclusions in her mind. Although she knew it wasn’t right to suspect her own mother, reality didn’t leave her much choice. Given everything she knew, it was entirely possible.
Aurora took a deep breath. “You don’t need to worry about these things. This is my business. Besides, whether or not he kept it from me has nothing to do with you. Even if he is part of the Carter family, that doesn’t mean he’ll do anything to help our company. If this is about work, you’d better focus on saving yourself.”
“How can you talk to me like that?” Grace’s face darkened as she watched Aurora rise from her seat, embarrassment and anger flashing in her eyes. She had come here intending to have a calm, honest conversation, but Aurora clearly had no interest in doing that. It was obvious that there was no way this talk would end peacefully. Grace also felt that her authority as a mother was being openly challenged. And when she compared this defiant Aurora to the gentle, considerate Tessa, it was painfully clear which daughter was easier to love. Some things didn’t even require hesitation.
“I only became this way because you pushed me to it,” Aurora said firmly. “Since I’ve already left the company, it means I no longer have anything to do with it. Apart from the shares that rightfully belong to me, I want nothing else. I’ve made that very clear.”
Grace gave a cold snort, crossing her arms and looking at her with disdain. “You’ve already turned against me. Do you really think I’d still give you those shares?”
Aurora froze, her expression hardening. “If you refuse to give me my shares, then don’t expect me to care about our so-called mother-daughter bond anymore.”
