Chapter 1415

Though Tessaโ€™s lips were curved in a smile, it never quite reached her eyes. Something in that look made Arnoldโ€™s stomach twist with unease, as if danger were quietly circling him. โ€œMiss Tessa, is there something you need?โ€ he asked, forcing his tone to stay steady. This time, Tessa didnโ€™t bother to hide her intentions. โ€œArnold, youโ€™ve worked in our house for so many years. By now, you should know what to say and what not to.โ€ A cold ripple ran through him. He understood immediately what she meant.

He quickly put on an innocent expression. โ€œMiss Tessa, Iโ€™m just a housekeeper. I only handle whatโ€™s within my duties. I donโ€™t know anything else.โ€ โ€œReally?โ€ Her eyes narrowed slightly, her smile sharpening. Clearly, she didnโ€™t believe him. โ€œOf course," Arnold replied without missing a beat. "Iโ€™m only a servant. I take care of the house, and thatโ€™s all. I donโ€™t get involved in anything else.โ€

Tessaโ€™s tone turned airy, but her words carried steel. โ€œGood. Because if that ever changesโ€“well, youโ€™re not young anymore, are you? Maybe a long rest back home would do you some good.โ€ The threat hung in the air, unmistakable. Arnold didnโ€™t flinch. โ€œYouโ€™re right, Miss Tessa. Iโ€™ll make sure to report anything important directly to you. I know where my place is. Iโ€™m just a housekeeper, nothing more.โ€

His quick show of loyalty seemed to please her. That was exactly the response she wanted. Tessaโ€™s smile softened, but the glint in her eyes remained. โ€œThatโ€™s good to hear. I like people who know their place. And donโ€™t worry, if you ever run into any trouble, you can always come to me. Iโ€™ll help however I can.โ€ She tilted her head slightly, her voice smooth as silk. โ€œYouโ€™ve worked hard for so long. No need to tire yourself out at your age, right?โ€ Arnold nodded quickly, lowering his gaze. โ€œYouโ€™re very thoughtful, Miss Tessa. Donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ll continue to serve the Walton family faithfully.โ€ โ€œGood, then. You can get back to work. Iโ€™m a little tired myself,โ€ Tessa said lightly before turning away. She disappeared down the hall, leaving Arnold alone in the kitchen. He watched her retreating figure, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides. So, she really was suspicious of him now. It seemed heโ€™d have to be even more careful from this point on. He couldnโ€™t afford to lose this jobโ€“not after all these years. Heโ€™d grown too used to this house, to the rhythm of life here. Starting over somewhere else at his age would be nearly impossible. Maybe she was right. He was just a housekeeper. What was the point of worrying about things that werenโ€™t his concern?

With that thought, Arnold exhaled slowly, letting the tension ease from his shoulders.

Overseas.

After renting a villa, Joseph began a new life abroad, but his main goal hadnโ€™t changed. He was going to find Judy. She had come all the way here behind his back, and that was something he couldnโ€™t accept, especially after swearing she loved him, only to turn around and run off with another man.
