Chapter 1415
Though Tessaโs lips were curved in a smile, it never quite reached her eyes. Something in that look made Arnoldโs stomach twist with unease, as if danger were quietly circling him. โMiss Tessa, is there something you need?โ he asked, forcing his tone to stay steady. This time, Tessa didnโt bother to hide her intentions. โArnold, youโve worked in our house for so many years. By now, you should know what to say and what not to.โ A cold ripple ran through him. He understood immediately what she meant.
He quickly put on an innocent expression. โMiss Tessa, Iโm just a housekeeper. I only handle whatโs within my duties. I donโt know anything else.โ โReally?โ Her eyes narrowed slightly, her smile sharpening. Clearly, she didnโt believe him. โOf course," Arnold replied without missing a beat. "Iโm only a servant. I take care of the house, and thatโs all. I donโt get involved in anything else.โ
Tessaโs tone turned airy, but her words carried steel. โGood. Because if that ever changesโwell, youโre not young anymore, are you? Maybe a long rest back home would do you some good.โ The threat hung in the air, unmistakable. Arnold didnโt flinch. โYouโre right, Miss Tessa. Iโll make sure to report anything important directly to you. I know where my place is. Iโm just a housekeeper, nothing more.โ
His quick show of loyalty seemed to please her. That was exactly the response she wanted. Tessaโs smile softened, but the glint in her eyes remained. โThatโs good to hear. I like people who know their place. And donโt worry, if you ever run into any trouble, you can always come to me. Iโll help however I can.โ She tilted her head slightly, her voice smooth as silk. โYouโve worked hard for so long. No need to tire yourself out at your age, right?โ Arnold nodded quickly, lowering his gaze. โYouโre very thoughtful, Miss Tessa. Donโt worry, Iโll continue to serve the Walton family faithfully.โ โGood, then. You can get back to work. Iโm a little tired myself,โ Tessa said lightly before turning away. She disappeared down the hall, leaving Arnold alone in the kitchen. He watched her retreating figure, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides. So, she really was suspicious of him now. It seemed heโd have to be even more careful from this point on. He couldnโt afford to lose this jobโnot after all these years. Heโd grown too used to this house, to the rhythm of life here. Starting over somewhere else at his age would be nearly impossible. Maybe she was right. He was just a housekeeper. What was the point of worrying about things that werenโt his concern?
With that thought, Arnold exhaled slowly, letting the tension ease from his shoulders.
Overseas.
After renting a villa, Joseph began a new life abroad, but his main goal hadnโt changed. He was going to find Judy. She had come all the way here behind his back, and that was something he couldnโt accept, especially after swearing she loved him, only to turn around and run off with another man.
