Listen to this chapter:

Last time, sheโ€™d gotten lucky and managed to avoid trouble, but what about this time?

After all these years, Aurora knew her mother well enough. Grace had always been the type who valued money above all else. Since her father passed away early, her motherโ€™s care for her children had always been selective, given only when convenient, and sheโ€™d always favored Tessa. There really wasnโ€™t any other way to describe her. Even Megan had mentioned it recentlyโ€”that Grace seemed different lately.

She didnโ€™t even dare visit Auroraโ€™s home anymore; whenever they needed to talk, Aurora was the one who went to see her instead.

Hearing her reasoning, Lucas didnโ€™t push further. He knew Aurora well enough to understand her decisions came from careful thought, and he respected that.

โ€œAlright, but promise me one thingโ€”if anything happens, you tell me right away. Iโ€™m always behind you, Aurora. I want to be your support, not someone you have to hide things from.โ€

His words, steady and sincere, made her heart soften.

โ€œI know,โ€ she replied quietly. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. If something happens, youโ€™ll be the first to know.โ€

โ€œWhen are you planning to go?โ€

Aurora hesitated for a moment, then said, โ€œProbably tomorrow. Iโ€™d rather get it over with before the show airs. Otherwise, Iโ€™ll never be able to focus.โ€

Lucas nodded. โ€œThatโ€™s reasonable. Do you want me to drive you there?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no need,โ€ she said with a small smile. โ€œYouโ€™ve got work, and I donโ€™t want to distract you with my family drama.โ€

Lucas frowned immediately, clearly displeased by that answer.

โ€œYouโ€™ve never been a distraction to me,โ€ Lucas said, his tone firm and sincere. โ€œIn my eyes, youโ€™ve always been my treasure, never my burden.โ€

There wasnโ€™t a trace of exaggeration or pretense in his expression. He knew Aurora well enough to understand that she hated troubling him, which was exactly why he kept repeating itโ€”to remind her she didnโ€™t have to hold back.

They were husband and wife. There shouldnโ€™t be hesitation or secrets between them, only honesty and trust. That was the only way a marriage could last.

โ€œI know,โ€ Aurora said softly after a pause. โ€œI shouldnโ€™t have said it like that.โ€

She looked at him with a touch of guilt, her voice gentle. โ€œI was overthinking things. Youโ€™re right, weโ€™re supposed to be partners, not two people worrying about getting in each otherโ€™s way.โ€

She took a breath and continued, โ€œI just didnโ€™t want to interrupt your work. You have your own responsibilities, and I didnโ€™t want to be one more thing to worry about.โ€

Lucas reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

โ€œYou never interrupt anything. I just want you to stop carrying so much on your own, alright?โ€ His voice softened, a hint of pleading in it.

Seeing the earnest look in his eyes, Aurora finally realized how much her words had hurt him.

She nodded solemnly. โ€œI wonโ€™t say things like that again. But still, Iโ€™ll go on my own tomorrow. If my mother sees you with me, sheโ€™ll just start another round of unnecessary talk.โ€
