Chapter 1518

Hearing that, a flicker of doubt crossed Aaronโ€™s eyes. Maybe things really were as Tessa said.

โ€œSo, what you mean isโ€ฆ your sister hid his identity, too?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Tessa answered without hesitation. โ€œMy mother and I had no idea who Lucas really was. At first, we even thought he was some pretty boy living off her.โ€

โ€œYou couldโ€™ve seen it yourself. At my motherโ€™s birthday party, he gave her a gift. We honestly thought it was fake.โ€

Aaron frowned in surprise. โ€œSeriously? That actually happened?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Tessa replied quickly. โ€œBack then, I really believed he was just a sugar baby, so I wasnโ€™t very polite to him. Maybe thatโ€™s why Aurora chose to hide his identity and trick all of us.โ€

As she spoke, a faint tremor softened her voice.

Her lashes shimmered with tears as she looked straight at him. โ€œI swear, I never meant to deceive you. I just didnโ€™t know who Lucas really was.โ€

Aaronโ€™s heart wavered. Seeing her eyes glisten like that, he was convinced she must be telling the truth. Maybe he really had misunderstood her.

โ€œI didnโ€™t expect you didnโ€™t know, either,โ€ he said, his tone easing with guilt. โ€œSeems I really was wrong about you. I never thought to look at it from that angle.โ€

Tessa turned her head slightly, her voice gentle.

โ€œItโ€™s fine. Even we didnโ€™t know who he really was, so how could I expect you to? Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ my sisterโ€™s gone too far lately."

โ€œOtherwise, I wouldnโ€™t have even mentioned any of this. I never imagined sheโ€™d end up with such a powerful man. I truly am sorry.โ€

Then she looked at him with concern. โ€œAaron, are you all right? Did Lucas or your family make things difficult for you?โ€

Warmth flickered in his chest. He hadnโ€™t expected her to worry about him at a time like this.

โ€œNot great,โ€ he admitted, straightening his shoulders. โ€œBut donโ€™t worry, I can handle it.โ€

In truth, the situation was a mess, but his pride wouldnโ€™t let him admit it, not when he finally had the chance to regain his footing in front of her.

He didnโ€™t want Tessa to think less of him.

Tessa let out a soft sigh of relief.

โ€œThatโ€™s good. I was really worried this might cause trouble for you. But hearing you say that, I can finally relax. Iโ€™m so sorry, Aaron. Next time, if anything happens, Iโ€™ll tell you right away.โ€

Then she smoothly shifted all the blame onto Aurora.

โ€œLook at how things turned out. If my sister had told me about Lucasโ€™ identity earlier, none of this wouldโ€™ve happened. I wouldโ€™ve told you the truth from the start.โ€

Aaronโ€™s expression softened. โ€œThis really isnโ€™t your fault. If anyoneโ€™s to blame, itโ€™s your sister. Sheโ€™s far too cunning, keeping it from her own family.โ€

โ€œI never thought sheโ€™d be like that. You should really stay away from her from now on.โ€

Tessaโ€™s eyes glistened as she looked up at him. โ€œBut wouldnโ€™t that be wrong? Sheโ€™s still my sister, after all. Mother doesnโ€™t want to see us at odds.โ€

Aaron scoffed. โ€œBut sheโ€™s the one who kept this from you. Sheโ€™s the one hoarding all of Lucasโ€™ power and status for herself. Sheโ€™s out there enjoying the spotlight, while you and your mother are left worrying about company projects. Tell me, is that fair to you?โ€
