Chapter 155

She couldnโ€™t help wondering โ€“ what did his wife look like? What kind of woman was she?

The man sheโ€™d had her eyes on for so long, the one she grew up with, had been taken by someone else just like that. How could she possibly be willing to accept it?

Today, she was determined to meet this so-called wife.

Lucas offered to drive Wendy back, but she refused.

โ€œLukey, I hardly ever come to Ravenshote. Are you really going to make me stay in a hotel the whole time?โ€

She sat in the backseat, turning her head toward the window, lips slightly pouting.

It wasnโ€™t that she didnโ€™t want to sit in the front.

She had tried until Lucasโ€™s reaction made it very clear she shouldnโ€™t.

The moment sheโ€™d reached for the passenger door, he had snapped, telling her that seat was reserved for his wife.

She would never forget how heโ€™d shut her down when she joked, โ€œNot even me? Iโ€™m not like those other women. We grew up together!โ€

Sheโ€™d teased him playfully. โ€œCome on, Lukey, save that line for someone else. Donโ€™t use it on your childhood friend.โ€

And with that, she had tried to climb in.

But Lucasโ€™ expression had turned dark as thunder. โ€œWendy Shaws, donโ€™t make me repeat myself.โ€

The moment he called her by her full name, she genuinely got scared.

Lucas had always been patient with her, but when it came to certain boundaries, he never budged.

Left with no choice, sheโ€™d sulked her way into the backseat.

And now here they were.

Wendy had no intention of staying in a hotel for the rest of her visit.

She hadnโ€™t come to Ravenshore just for fun โ€“ she came for Lucas.

Hearing her protest, Lucas realized she had a point. This arrangement really wasnโ€™t ideal.

After all, she was just a girl โ€“ having her stay alone in a hotel didnโ€™t seem entirely safe.

And he had promised Kenneth heโ€™d take good care of her.

Wendy caught the flicker of hesitation in Lucasโ€™ expression and pressed her advantage.

โ€œLukey, I donโ€™t want to stay alone tonight. Iโ€™m scared,โ€ she said, her voice soft and sweet. โ€œLet me stay with you, just for tonight.

โ€œI mean, your wife wonโ€™t mind, right? I even called you my bro.โ€

Lucas had no other choice.

She sounded so sure of herself, and he had no concrete reason to say no.

So, he drove her back to his place. It would only be temporary. Heโ€™d make proper arrangements later.

When Aurora returned, she happened to walk in on the two of them talking in the living room.

โ€œLukey, your place is so nicely decorated. Can I just stay here forever?โ€ a cheerful female voice rang out.

Lucas rubbed his forehead. โ€œYouโ€™re not a kid anymore. You canโ€™t say things like that.โ€

โ€œJust say yes or no,โ€ the girl pouted. โ€œCome on, with everything between us, whatโ€™s wrong with me sticking around a little?โ€

Lucas sighed, helpless. โ€œFine. Whatever.โ€

Only then did Wendy smile in satisfaction. โ€œI knew you were the best!โ€

At the sound of her voice, Aurora instinctively took a step back.

She looked into the living room and saw a young, adorable woman clinging to Lucasโ€™ arm, her voice soft and playful as she teased him.

The man she knew, her husband, stood there without pushing the girl away.

He only wore a tired, indulgent smile.

And the girlโ€ฆ wasnโ€™t she the same one Aurora had seen at the airport?

In that moment, something inside her cracked.

She suddenly felt like she was the outsider in her own home.

Logic screamed at her to storm in, slap the girl across the face, and throw their marriage certificate in front of her.

But instead, she felt completely drained, like all her strength had been stripped away in an instant.

Aurora turned to leave, but her foot caught the edge of the shoe cabinet, knocking it with a sharp thud.

Lucas looked up and rushed over.

When he saw it was Aurora, his expression shifted, and he quickly tried to explain.

โ€œAurora, this is my sister. Sheโ€™s just staying for a little while. Youโ€ฆโ€
