Chapter 245
Wendy had taken a solid fall, and Lucas used both hands to help her up.
She leaned into him instinctively, her body pressing lightly against his. It was summer, after all, and with both of them dressed lightly in sleepwear, the scene looked far more intimate than it should have.
Aurora stepped out just in time to see it, and the sight hit her like a bolt of lightning.
โWhat are you doing?โ
No one knew how long sheโd been standing there before she finally found her voice and asked the question.
Lucas was quick to explain. โShe fell. I was helping her up.โ
โYeah, look, I even hurt my face, Aurora,โ Wendy chimed in, pointing to the faint red mark on her cheek.
Auroraโs gaze shifted to the mark. There was indeed a visible sign of the fall.
But stillโฆ
โSo you just happened to fall, right here, at our bedroom door? How convenient.โ
Aurora couldnโt help the dry laugh that escaped her lips. What were the odds? And right as sheโd finished washing up, no less. She had to admit, Wendy was calculated. Honestly, Aurora felt she deserved an award.
Even Lucas started to feel something was off. Wendy fell because he suddenly opened the door.
But stillโฆ
His eyes narrowed slightly, and he said quietly, โEnough, Rora. Let her go back to her room.โ
He didnโt want Auroraโs attention lingering on Wendy any longer. This was their life and spaceโWendy was an outsider. He was already considering whether it was time to send Wendy away altogether.
But to Aurora, his words meant something else entirely.
โSo what, you think Iโm picking on her now?โ
She stared at him, disbelief written all over her face. That tone and choice of words clearly showed he was siding with Wendy.
Even Wendy herself couldnโt hide the surprise and delight in her eyes as she looked at Lucas.
She just knew Lucas would never truly leave her behind. That bond they shared since childhoodโhow could someone like Aurora, who came into the picture so much later, possibly understand it?
โLukey, Iโm so glad youโre here,โ Wendy said sweetly, bringing up old memories on purpose. โRemember when I broke the neighborโs window when we were kids? You covered for me then tooโฆ Youโve always been there.โ
Her eyes glistened with a tangled, veiled affection, locked unwaveringly on Lucas.
Aurora let out a cold laugh. โGot it.โ
So, they were the real couple now, and she was the third wheel? Was that what this was?
โEnough. You should get some rest,โ Lucas said, not even bothering to ask about Wendyโs injury. He could see clearly that Aurora was not in a good mood.
Wendy, however, deliberately fanned the flames. โBut Lukey, I think I twisted my ankleโฆ and my faceโdo you think Iโll be scarred?โ
She couldnโt see the damage, only felt the burning sting and assumed it was serious. But to both Aurora and Lucas, the injury was so minor it was barely worth mentioning.
Aurora couldnโt help but scoff. โAlright, stop the act. With that kind of injury, even the doctor might say itโs hopeless.โ
โWhat?โ Wendy blinked, clearly not understanding. โWhat do you mean by that?โ she asked, confused.
Lucas had seen enough. โGo back. Thereโs a first-aid kit in the cabinet in the living room. Use it for your foot.โ
He pinched the bridge of his nose, his patience wearing thin. Something about Wendy tonight was seriously grating on him. He made a mental note to call Kenneth soon. Wendy staying here this long clearly wasnโt working.
And the way she was acting only made Aurora more certain of one thingโWendy still had feelings for Lucas.
