Chapter 28
Aurora glanced nervously at Lucas, who returned a look as if urging her not to run away, but to confront the situation directly. Gathering her courage, she reluctantly lowered the window and stared at Joseph in confusion. โJoseph, do you need something?โ
Josephโs eyes fell upon Lucas in the car, momentarily stunned, then his expression twisted into something even uglier. He scrutinized Lucas up and down, but due to the poor lighting in the parking lot, he could only make out the manโs vague profile.
Joseph turned to Aurora, his tone dripping with mockery. โAurora Walton, youโve already found yourself a new sugar daddy so soon? No wonder you dared speak to me like that at the banquet. Turns out youโve latched onto someone wealthy!โ
Judy quickly echoed, โAurora, even if youโre a broke student desperate for money, at least find yourself someone decent. This guy doesnโt look like much.โ
Aurora felt anger surge to her head instantly. She gave Joseph and Judy a freezing glare, her voice icy cold as she responded, โJoseph Hunt, are you out of your mind? Who Iโm with is none of your business. And you, Judy Moore, watch what you sayโone day your mouth will get you into trouble.โ
Without hesitation, Aurora raised the window, refusing to spare them another glance. Seeing this, Lucas instructed the driver to start the car, slowly pulling away from the parking lot.
Watching the car disappear into the distance, Josephโs face darkened with fury. He violently kicked a nearby trash bin, shouting angrily, โAurora Walton, just you waitโIโll make you pay for this!โ
Beside him, Judy offered insincere comfort. โJoseph, donโt get upset. Maybe sheโs just trying to provoke you.โ
โProvoke me?โ Joseph laughed bitterly. โDoes she really think pulling this stunt will make me crawl back to her? Sheโs delusional!โ
Inside the car, Aurora was still fuming. She took a deep breath, trying to regain her composure. Josephโs venomous comments lingered uncomfortably, like a fishbone lodged in her throat. She discreetly glanced at Lucas, who appeared perfectly calm, focused on his phone, seemingly unaffected by Josephโs remarks. โUmโฆ about what Joseph just saidโplease donโt take it seriously,โ Aurora began cautiously, choosing her words carefully. โHeโs just crazy, always talking nonsense.โ
Lucas chuckled softly and reached out, gently patting Auroraโs hand. โI know.โ
His touch was warm and reassuring, wrapping around her slightly cold fingers and sending a comforting warmth through her. โReally?โ Aurora was still a bit uneasy. After all, anyone hearing Josephโs accusations would feel uncomfortable. โHe and I are truly over, so please donโt misunderstand.โ
โI believe you,โ Lucas replied softly, caressing Auroraโs cheek with his thumb. โDonโt let irrelevant people spoil your mood. Theyโre not worth it.โ
Auroraโs heart fluttered, a comforting warmth spreading through her chest. She hadnโt expected Lucas to be so considerate and understanding, so different from men who only knew jealousy and arguments. Suddenly, she found herself thinking that marrying Lucas on a whim wasnโt such a bad idea after all.
When they arrived home, Aurora was surprised to find that Lucas had already prepared a table filled with dishes she loved. Steam rose gently from the table, delicious aromas filling the air. Under the soft glow of the crystal chandelier, the delicate tableware sparkled brilliantly.
Auroraโs eyes widened slightly as she noticed the plate of spicy buffalo wingsโone of her absolute favorites. She curiously picked up a piece and tasted it. The chicken wings were perfectly crisp, generously coated in a spicy, tangy sauceโeach bite juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. An absolute delight.
โHow did you know spicy buffalo wings was my favorite?โ Aurora couldnโt resist asking, her voice tinged with curiosity.
