The words Megan had been about to blurt out froze on her lips the moment she saw who was speaking. She’d assumed it was someone else asking, but realizing it was Aurora herself caught her completely off guard.

Megan could be fierce, relentless, and unyielding with anyone, but when it came to Aurora, her defenses always faltered. She didn’t want this ugliness to reach her. Not tonight.

Aurora watched her for a moment, sensing something wasn’t right. “Megan, what’s wrong? Why won’t you say anything?”

There was a pause, just long enough for worry to settle in. Something was being hidden from her.

Still, she looked Megan in the eye and said firmly, “But if something happens, you have to tell me. Don’t keep it to yourself.” Megan gave a small smile. “I promise.”

Just as Aurora turned to leave, a sharp, mocking voice rang out from the crowd: “Oh, please. What’s with the act? We all know she’s the one seducing her own sister’s fiancé.”

“She might look all high and mighty now, but who knows what kind of woman she really is behind closed doors?”

Megan’s eyes instantly welled up with tears of fury, locking on to the person who dared say such things. “What nonsense are you spouting?”

Megan snapped, but the moment the words left her mouth, her gaze flicked anxiously to Aurora. How much of that had she heard? Would it ruin her mood? This was an important evening–with so many influential guests present. If her image were tainted by gossip like this, who would still be willing to partner with her afterward?

Megan felt a wave of panic. She couldn’t let Aurora be dragged down because of this.
