Listen to this chapter:

"Who knows? Maybe youโ€™re just lucky."

The two exchanged a smile. Lucas had noticed the change, too. Ever since they cleared the air yesterday, the tension between them had dissolved. Now, whenever Aurora saw him, she didnโ€™t avoid him anymore. Instead, she would even lean in a little closer. That thought alone filled Lucas with joy. He would never let go of Aurora again.

"By the way, I didnโ€™t catch what you two were talking about at the door just now?โ€ he asked, thinking back to what Wendy had said earlier. He could barely hold back his irritation, wishing he could send her packing right this minute. Still, he couldnโ€™t figure out why Kenneth hadnโ€™t responded at all; it had been quite a while. Had he already forgotten that his sister was still here? The man truly had an ability to detach that was remarkable.

He still couldnโ€™t reach Kenneth, and it wasnโ€™t like he could just send Wendy back unannounced. They had known each other for years, after all, and he didnโ€™t want to damage that relationship.

Aurora recalled what they had been talking about earlier, and the memories of the hurt sheโ€™d suffered from her mother came flooding back. She had already prepared herself emotionally, ready to share everything with Lucas. But Wendyโ€™s sudden interruption threw her off completely, scattering the thoughts she had carefully organized. After thinking for a bit, she finally decided to tell Lucas everything.

"So, youโ€™re sayingโ€ฆ if you donโ€™t clear up the online rumors within three days, your mother will strip you of your position, is that right?"

Aurora gave a helpless nod in response. โ€œThatโ€™s exactly it. I thought the matter had already been put to restโ€”the event was over, after all. Who wouldโ€™ve thought someone still clinging to it would drag it back into the spotlight?โ€ She rubbed her forehead, exasperated. At this point, she honestly didnโ€™t know what to do.

Lucas looked at her troubled face and wished he could shoulder the burden for her. โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry,โ€ Lucas said. โ€œJust like we did at the galaโ€”if we make it public that weโ€™re together now, wouldnโ€™t that be enough? Some people, no matter how much they gossip, wonโ€™t have much to say once youโ€™re officially a married woman. They canโ€™t keep throwing dirt at you forever.โ€

Aurora thought it over and realized he had a point.

Lucas continued, reassuring her, โ€œAs for the rest of themโ€”leave that to me. Iโ€™ll handle it, alright?โ€

Aurora looked up at him, a bit surprised. She couldnโ€™t quite put her finger on it, but something about Lucas seemed different. โ€œBe honest with me, do you have some kind of powerful connection?โ€

Lucasโ€™s heart skipped a beat. Of all the things she couldโ€™ve guessed, he hadnโ€™t expected this. But once she said it, he breathed a sigh of relief. He thought she might have uncovered his true identityโ€”but no, she was just guessing about his connections.

He let out a soft laugh. "Yeah, didnโ€™t I tell you before? I know the CEO of Vanguard Group. How else do you think we kept running into each other at that company?"
