Now that Aurora needed his help, Leonard knew he couldn’t shrink back. He had to step forward and face everything head-on. If he chose to hide in the background now, he’d lose respect for himself. The four of them crowded around the phone, all eyes fixed on the screen—would Jason answer? Thankfully, he didn’t let them down. When he saw who was calling, he hesitated at first, but it didn’t take long for him to realize that Aurora was likely on the other end. And he answered. After all, this was her mother. She had every right to know what was going on.

Aurora’s eyes lit up with hope as the line connected. Her hunch had been right. Despite the mess, trust still existed between colleagues. She glanced at her assistant and gave a subtle signal to speak. Ian cleared his throat and spoke softly into the phone. “Mr. Jason, I… I called you because there’s something I need to ask.”

“Mhm. I figured.” Jason let out a quiet sigh. Even now, this kid still couldn’t keep his nerves in check. But the moment he heard his voice, Jason already knew what it was about. “Alright, I know why you’re calling. Get to the point.”

Aurora’s eyes sparked. It appeared that Jason had understood her intention. “She’s next to you, isn’t she?” Jason’s voice came through clearly. “If I’m right, Miss Walton is with you right now, listening in on this call.”

Aurora’s eyes gleamed. That was exactly what she expected from him. No point pretending anymore. “Talking to smart people is always easier,” she said with a grin.

Jason gave a small chuckle. “Of course, I know she’s there. Back when Miss Tessa used my phone to call, I couldn’t exactly stop her.”

“It’s alright. I understand,” Aurora replied calmly. Aurora didn’t hold anything against Jason for what had happened earlier. She knew how it worked—everyone was just trying to do their jobs. But even so, a new hesitation crept into her heart.

“So… what are you thinking now?” she asked quietly. “Are you going to help her go against me?”

Jason shook his head and chuckled. “Come on, Miss Walton. If I was on her side, would I have let you make this call?”

“Let’s not beat around the bush. She’s your mother. There’s no reason to hide where she is. I’m the Chairwoman’s assistant, not anyone’s pawn. I’m just doing my job. Nothing more.”

Aurora let out a quiet breath, finally reassured. She understood now exactly where Jason stood. “Alright. I appreciate it. I won’t forget you helped me today. And I won’t let Tessa give you a hard time over this.”

Jason just gave a small laugh. “Miss Walton, I think you’re giving Miss Tessa too much credit,” “I already told you that I work for the Chairwoman. If she wants to make things difficult for me, let’s see if she even has the power to pull that off.”

Aurora paused, slightly stunned by his confidence. She’d clearly underestimated Jason. A moment later, she smiled. “Alright then. Send me the location. I’ll head over now. You know I’ve been worried about her since I left the company.”
