Even with his thick skin, Julian couldnโt ignore the clear message in Graceโs toneโshe wanted him gone.
โAlright then, Madam Grace. Please get some rest. Iโll come visit again another time.โ
Grace gave a noncommittal hum and said nothing more. The moment she realized Julian had come with an agenda, her interest had evaporated.
โSee him out, Tessa.โ
Tessa cheerfully agreed and followed Julian to the door.
Once they stepped outside, Julian couldnโt hold back. โTessa, what was that about? Whatโs your mom trying to say?โ
โOh? Dropping the act now?โ she shot back with a mocking smile. โWerenโt you all โMadam Grace thisโ and โMadam Grace thatโ just a minute ago?โ
The jab wiped the smile right off Julianโs face. โTessa, is this really how youโre going to talk to me?โ he said, his voice tightening as he clenched his fists. โCanโt we just have a proper conversation for once?โ
Tessa gave a nod. โSure. Then tell me, why is your family so hell-bent on rushing this marriage?โ
At first, Julian looked encouraged by her tone, but as soon as her words sank in, his face darkened again. โI already explained everything to your mom in there, didnโt I?โ he said, his patience thinning. โWhy do you have to keep harping on this?โ
Tessa let out a cold laugh. There was no real amusement behind it, only sharp-edged sarcasm. โSo you admit itโs pointless to keep pushing one issue. Then what makes you think forcing me to marry you isnโt equally pointless?โ
Julian met her accusing gaze but couldnโt find a single word to say. He couldnโt let her find out the real reason his family was rushing the wedding. If she did, everything they planned would fall apart.
He drew in a long breath, trying to collect himself. โTessa, itโs alright. Just talk to Mom again, will you? Our side still hopes the wedding can happen as soon as possible,โ Julian said, reaching for her wrist as if to pull her into a hug.
But Tessa quickly stepped back. โDonโt touch me.โ
Julian froze in embarrassment and reluctantly let go. โAlright, alright. I wonโt.โ
โJust try to see it from my side,โ he added, trying to soften his tone. โI only want to be with you sooner. I hate being apart from you.โ
Tessa didnโt respond to his plea. โYou should go. I need to get back.โ
After being shut down again and again, Julianโs face turned stiff. He had no choice but to retreat. โFine. Just talk to your mom, okay? Iโll come by another time.โ
When Tessa returned, she found Grace sitting calmly on the couch, clearly waiting for her. Tessa knew exactly what that meant. She walked over, sat down, and clung to her motherโs arm, leaning in with a soft, playful tone.
โMom, thank you.โ
Grace smiled. โYouโre my daughter. Of course, I donโt want to marry you off so soon. And honestly, Julianโs eagerness is a little too much. Who knows what the Hayes family are really after.โ
Tessa looked up, surprised. โSo, you noticed too?โ
Grace gave her nose a gentle tap. โSilly girl. Iโve seen a lot more than you think. Their little schemes are nothing new to me. Theyโre not getting past me so easily.โ
