Chapter 480
He had no idea how Aurora was doing these past couple of days.
While heโd been away, Lucas thought about her more than onceโabout the warmth of her in his arms and the softness he'd gotten so used to.
As for Wendy sitting in the backseat, all Lucas wanted now was to get in touch with Kenneth. Heโd had enough of Kennethโs beloved sister. He truly couldnโt deal with her any longer.
Back at the house, Wendy followed him out of the car, sticking close behind, not daring to fall a step behind. The aura radiating off him was downright intimidating, and she didnโt have the nerve to speak up. In truth, she still didnโt know what had come over her when sheโd taken his phone. Her body had moved faster than her brain.
Biting her lip, she kept trying to build up the courage until she finally reached out and tugged lightly at his sleeve. โLukeyโฆโ
Lucas turned, his brows sharply furrowed, his expression icy. โThis better be important.โ
He was waiting to charge his phone. He had no patience left for this.
When he stepped inside, the house was pitch dark. Aurora was clearly not at home. A flicker of worry crossed his mind. This was usually the time sheโd be inโwhere could she be?
Wendy hesitated, then awkwardly asked, โCan youโฆ not tell my brother? Lukey, I promise, I wonโt bother you again.โ She didnโt want Kenneth knowing what had gone down tonight, especially not the part where sheโd blocked him. If he compared notes with Lucas, everything would unravel. She looked at Lucas with pleading eyes, hoping for even a sliver of sympathy.
But Lucas yanked his sleeve out of her grasp without hesitation. โThatโs not your call to make.โ With that, the conversation was over. He turned and strode straight toward his room, not sparing her another glance.
Wendy stared at the tall, broad figure walking away. Brand new, there was no room left for subjugation. Everyone was pressuring her. So why should she keep considering everyone else? The smile on her face twisted into something wild and unhinged, bearing no trace of the sweetness she'd shown.
Lucas headed straight into his room and quickly plugged in his phone. He held down the power button, and as soon as the screen lit up, messages from the contact labeled โRoraโ popped up. A spark of joy lit in his chest. So, they were still in sync. The moment his phone powered on, her messages came through. Smiling faintly, he opened the app, only to realize both messages had been sent over two hours ago. The smile froze on his face.
What explanation?
He didnโt understand any of it. He tapped on the call log and spotted the red notification. She had tried calling him twice. Aurora rarely ever called him like that. What couldโve happened to make her reach out repeatedly? A heavy sense of dread settled in his gut.
He quickly typed a message back: โRora, what are you talking about? What explanation? I donโt understand.โ
He waited.
Nothing came.
His heartbeat grew louder in his ears, pounding like war drums.
But on Auroraโs end, she was already resting. The IV drip had finished, and after asking the nurse to remove the needle, she finally dozed off into a deep sleep.
