Chapter 495
Following Lucas was no accident. This was exactly what Wendy had been aiming for. She wanted to see for herself what Aurora had been up to all night. She didnโt answer any calls and messagesโwhat could she possibly be doing? And now, even after all this time, there was still no sign of her.
On the drive over, Lucas found himself reconsidering whether bringing Wendy along had been a mistake. What if Aurora saw her? Would it upset her?
After a few moments of hesitation, he pulled over to the side of the road.
โYou should get out.โ
Wendy blinked, confused. โWhat? Lukey, weโre already halfway there, and you want to just dump me out?โ
โCall a cab. Get back on your own. Get out now.โ
His words stunned her. She had no idea what had suddenly changed. How could someone shift so quickly, without warning?
โBut weโre in the middle of nowhere,โ she said, voice turning soft and wounded. โWhere am I supposed to go?โ
โI just want to check on Aurora. Iโm not going there to cause drama. I wonโt say anything out of line,โ she added quickly, eyes wide with pleading innocence.
Lucas hesitated again. As much as he hated to admit it, she wasnโt wrong. They really were out in the middle of the road, and it would be hard for her to find a ride. And after all, she was Kennethโs little sister. Kicking her out like this didnโt sit entirely right. He ran through the possibilities in his mind, weighing the outcome.
Finally, he gave in. โFine. You can come with me. But the second Aurora shows any discomfort, any at all, you leave. Immediately.โ
โOf course. You can count on me, Lukey,โ she said sweetly, clenching her fists even as she smiled.
It didnโt matter. As long as she could lay eyes on that bitch and see what kind of state she was in now, it was worth it. She could swallow the discomfort, hold back the bitterness. She could take whatever it took to win in the end. A person with grand ambitions couldnโt afford to be tripped up by petty emotions.
Wendy took a deep breath, forcing herself to swallow the rising frustration. She knew Lucasโ temper all too wellโif she pushed him even slightly, he wouldnโt hesitate to kick her out, right there on the road.
Chapter 495
The only reason he was still being remotely civil to her was because of her brother. If not for Kenneth, she wouldโve been dumped out of the car long ago.
Now she shrank into the back seat like a quail, silent and small, not daring to make a sound. She did her best to minimize her presence, hoping not to spark another outburst that would leave her stranded on the roadside.
The rest of the drive passed in tense, complete silence. When they arrived at the hospital, Wendy trailed behind Lucas cautiously, barely daring to breathe too loudly. She didnโt say a single word. Lucas glanced back at her, noting her subdued demeanor, and nodded to himself in approval. Good. At least this way, he didnโt have to worry about upsetting Aurora further. Heโd also brought food with him, planning to check on her properly.
But the moment he reached the ward, his expression cracked. Something wasnโt right.
Wendy, still walking with her head down, didnโt notice heโd stopped and ended up bumping straight into his broad back.
โWhy did you stop?โ she asked, rubbing her nose with a slight scowl.
