Chapter 534

โ€œJudy, I know the biggest issue between us is my parents. But I promise, Iโ€™ll convince them,โ€ Joseph said seriously, his eyes full of determination.

He genuinely looked like he wanted to be with her.

But Judy wasnโ€™t that same girl anymore.

All she wanted now was to grow her studio, not play house with a man clinging to the past.

โ€œI get what youโ€™re saying,โ€ she replied, calm but firm.

โ€œBut weโ€™re still young. Can you stop obsessing over romance all the time? We could be building something instead.โ€

That hit a nerve.

โ€œI am building something!โ€ Joseph shot back.

โ€œIโ€™ve already started learning how to run the company. Iโ€™ve made huge progress! Why canโ€™t you see that Iโ€™m trying?โ€

Judy sighed and rubbed her temple.

โ€œOkay, fine. Youโ€™re making progress. Then let me askโ€“what exactly have you accomplished at the company so far?โ€

That stopped him cold.

He didnโ€™t know how to answer.

โ€œBut, Judyโ€ฆ you have to give me a chance,โ€ he said, flustered.

โ€œI really am trying. Iโ€™ve been learning from my dad. Iโ€™m doing way better than I used to.โ€

Judy pointed toward her studio.

โ€œDo you see this place?โ€

โ€œThis is something I built from the ground up. And I did it right after we broke up. And you? Weโ€™ve been apart for this long, and what do you have to show for it?โ€

She let out a slow breath.

โ€œLook, I know I shouldnโ€™t tear you down, but if I donโ€™t say this now, itโ€™ll just eat away at me.โ€

Joseph took a step back, the swagger in his expression replaced by something weary and weathered.

He suddenly looked older and tired, like life had worn him down.

Seeing that only made Judy more put off.

It hadnโ€™t been that long since theyโ€™d parted, but what the hell had he been through?

Had their breakup really shaken him so much that heโ€™d stopped caring about himself entirely?

She remembered that in the beginning, she had been quite taken with Josephโ€™s looks.

Joseph, clearly shaken by her words, lowered his voice. โ€œJudy, do you see me as useless now?โ€

Judy nodded. โ€œYes.โ€

Before he could spiral into disappointment, she continued, โ€œBut more than anything, I want to see you improve. I want you to prove to your father that youโ€™re capable.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€

Before he could get a word in, Judy cut him off. โ€œI have an idea. You can try it. If it works, your father will have no choice but to see you in a new light.โ€

At that, Josephโ€™s eyes lit up.

He gripped her shoulders, eager. โ€œJudy, tell me. If itโ€™s something that could change my dadโ€™s opinion, Iโ€™ll do it. Whatever it is."

โ€œYou tell me to go east, I wonโ€™t even glance west.โ€

Hearing that, Judyโ€™s lips curled into a smile.

โ€œDid you know Auroraโ€™s in the hospital right now?โ€

Joseph blinked, caught off guard.

All the warmth in his gaze disappeared. โ€œSheโ€™s in the hospital?โ€

Judy replied, โ€œThe news just came in. Sheโ€™s still unconscious. Donโ€™t you think this is a good opportunity?โ€

โ€œWhat kind of opportunity?โ€

His clueless response made Judy want to scream.

Seriously? After everything that woman had doneโ€“sheโ€™d landed him in jail twiceโ€“and he still didnโ€™t feel anything?

Even now, he looked completely unaffected.
