Chapter 59

Aurora wasnโ€™t sure how to respond to Lucasโ€™ concern, so she turned away slightly. โ€œThis whole thing blew up so much. That person probably wouldnโ€™t dare show up again.โ€

But what if they did?

Lucas sighed inwardly but didnโ€™t press the issue. โ€œAlright. Letโ€™s go home.โ€

He had already instructed people to investigate the stalker. Until they had answers, he wasnโ€™t comfortable leaving Aurora alone.

She nodded quietly and followed him to the car.

Lucas frowned slightly.

Something was off with her.

Ever since last night, she had been distantโ€“subtle, but noticeable.

She was avoiding him.

Testing the waters, he reached out, intending to hold her hand, only to grasp nothing.

Aurora had just slipped her hands into her coat pockets.

Was it coincidence?

Or was she deliberately keeping her distance?

She acted like she didnโ€™t notice anything, glancing toward the parked cars. โ€œWhere did you leave your car?โ€

โ€œRight here.โ€

Lucas, masking his unease, walked ahead and very politely opened the passenger door for her.

Aurora hesitated for half a second before getting in.

Once she was settled, Lucas closed the door and walked around to the driverโ€™s side.

As he started the engine, he asked casually, โ€œThe fridge at home is nearly empty. Want to stop by the grocery store?โ€

Aurora instinctively wanted to refuseโ€”her head was starting to ache, and all she really wanted was to go home and rest.

But she hesitated.

If she said no again, Lucas would definitely start overanalyzing things.

So, after a pause, she agreed.

At the supermarket, Lucas smoothly grabbed a shopping cart and gestured for her to follow.

โ€œWeโ€™re not in a rush. Might as well look around for other things, too.โ€

Aurora shook her head.

She was already pushing herself just to be here.

Every breath made her throat itch.

Her head felt heavy, her legs light.

Maybe she had caught a small cold. She had worked up a sweat earlier, then immediately stepped outside into the cold air.

Suppressing a cough, she cleared her throat. โ€œFish. I feel like having steamed fish.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll go pick it out,โ€ Lucas said, handing the shopping cart to Aurora before heading toward the fresh seafood section.

He selected a lively, thrashing fish and had the store staff clean and prepare it.

When he turned back, he noticed that Aurora hadnโ€™t moved from where he left her.

She was standing still, facing away from him.

Following her gaze, he saw what had caught her attentionโ€“the dessert aisle, specifically the shelves lined with various chocolates.

So, she wants chocolate?

โ€œSir, your fish is ready.โ€

Lucas turned back for a moment to collect it.

When he looked again, Auroraโ€™s body wavered.

She stumbled slightly, nearly collapsing.

Fortunately, she caught herself against the railing.

Her hand lifted to her forehead, checking for warmth.

She didnโ€™t feel feverish.

Probably just something minor. Iโ€™ll be fine after a nap.

โ€œFish is ready,โ€ Lucasโ€™s voice called out again.

Aurora quickly straightened, trying to compose herself. โ€œAlright. You can pick up anything else you needโ€”itโ€™s your kitchen, so you decide.โ€

Lucas could tell she was eager to get home, so he made quick work of selecting ingredients.

On a whim, he also grabbed a few boxes of chocolate before heading to the self-checkout.

Handing her the car keys, he said, โ€œGo ahead to the car. Iโ€™ll be right behind you.โ€

โ€œGot it.โ€

Aurora took the keys and left.

She didnโ€™t even remember how she made it home.

By the time she opened her eyes again, she was already lying in bed.

A dim, warm light from the bedside lamp filled the room.

The door was left open, allowing the soft glow from the chandelier in the living room to mix with the warmth of the bedside light.

From the kitchen, the distant sounds of clinking dishes and simmering pots filled the air, blending with the delicious scent of food.

Aurora swallowed involuntarily.

She was starving.

โ€œAwake?โ€

Lucas had checked on her four times already.

The moment he saw her stirring, he walked in briskly and helped her sit up.

Then, he handed her a glass of warm water. โ€œDrink this first. Iโ€™ll get you some oatmeal.โ€

โ€œAnd after thatโ€“medicine. Because youโ€™re sick.โ€
