She immediately ran over with a cheerful smile, looping her arm through Nicholas' and chirped, "Daddy, what are you doing here with Tessa?"
Tessa simply raised her brows, catching on right away. "Emma, this is your father?" Her tone was filled with surprise, as if she’d just found out.
Nicholas was briefly caught off guard. He hadn’t expected to run into his daughter here. For a moment, he wasn’t sure how to explain the situation. But watching how quickly Tessa adapted, he actually found it rather amusing.
Emma nodded. "Yeah! Tessa, how come you two are together?"
Tessa smiled. "Emma, your dad’s amazing–he’s on our school’s board. I met him at a competition. He’s helped me a lot, so I wanted to pick out a gift to thank him." She happily linked arms with Emma. "Can you believe how small the world is? I never imagined the person who’s been helping me would turn out to be your dad!" Tessa looked at Nicholas with sparkling eyes, full of admiration.
Seeing that, Nicholas felt even more pleased with the clever girl. He’d worried she might slip up, but now it seemed her reflexes were sharper than he’d expected—even sharper than many of the old foxes he’d dealt with.
He placed a hand on Tessa’s shoulder and smiled at his daughter. "Emma, so you know this young lady?"
"Of course! We went to the same elementary school. She was always a top student!" Emma looked at Tessa with admiration in her eyes, clearly impressed.
Tessa, seeing that, lifted her chin with pride. Clearly, befriending Emma back then had been the right move. And just like that, the boomerang had come right back to her.
Nicholas laughed, clearly amused. Everything was falling into place—there was nothing left to worry about. Now the three of them could enjoy a carefree shopping trip together. "Alright then, since I’m in a good mood today, whatever you two want, just go pick it out, I’ll cover it."
At that, Emma beamed and kissed Nicholas on the cheek. "Thank you, Daddy! I knew you were the best!"
Nicholas chuckled. "Silly girl, you’re my only sweetheart—who else would I spoil if not you?" As he spoke, he discreetly slipped a black card into her hand while she wasn’t looking.
The smile in Tessa’s eyes deepened. See? That was how men were.
