He silently followed behind young Aurora.
Aurora walked ahead alone, her expression unreadable, calm and composed.
Arnold felt a pang of sorrow in his heart. She was such a good child—why couldn’t Grace see that and care for her just a little? In his eyes, comparing Aurora to Tessa wasn’t even necessary. Aurora was better in every way. He felt bitter inside. If it were up to him, he would’ve chosen Aurora without a second thought. There’d be no hesitation at all.
Watching Aurora’s small figure from behind, he truly ached for her. She was such an outstanding child—he simply couldn’t understand what Grace was thinking. But all he could do was stay quietly by her side. No matter what she faced, he’d be there, always standing on her side. Arnold could see it clearly now. No matter what, he’d treat Aurora like his own granddaughter. After all, he had lived his whole life without children. Now that he had met a little angel like Aurora, he didn’t have to worry about anything else.
As Aurora walked ahead with no expression on her face, a voice suddenly rang out in front of her. “Hey, Aurora!”
At the sound, her eyes lit up. Just moments ago, her face was blank—but the second she saw Megan, her eyes sparkled. Her tone turned cheerful. “Megan! What are you doing here?”
Megan was in the humanities class, while she was in the science stream. There were still quite a few buildings separating their two classrooms. Most of the time, the breaks between classes were too short for them to even see each other. That was exactly why Aurora treasured every meeting they had. So, this time, she was genuinely surprised. But the moment she saw Megan, all the gloom that had clouded her heart vanished instantly.
Megan lifted her chin slightly, looking at Aurora with pride. “I heard about it—our little Aurora, like a warrior, bagged another international award. How could I not come and celebrate with you properly?”
Hearing that, the smile in Aurora’s eyes deepened, and she instinctively linked arms with Megan. “Yes, yes, I should be the one thanking you. My dear Miss Megan is the best, always by my side.”
Megan, flattered by Aurora’s praise, smiled even brighter. At first, she hadn’t noticed Arnold. But when she saw him, she couldn’t help but feel a little displeased. She leaned in close to Aurora and whispered, “Aurora, today is a big day for you. Winning an award like this is no small thing.”
Aurora didn’t respond. She simply lowered her gaze. She had a rough idea of what Megan was about to say. She didn’t stop her, just let her continue.
Seeing that, Megan voiced the question that had been bothering her. “Why is it only Mr. Arnold who came? Where’s Madam Grace?”
Aurora pressed her lips tightly together. She knew Megan would eventually ask. She glanced at Arnold, unsure how to answer.
Seeing her like that, Megan made a bold guess. Being the impatient one, she came right out with it. “Is it because of your sister? Did Madam Grace stay with her instead?”
