Lucas followed behind, still thinking about what had just happened. If he hadn’t returned in time, Aurora could’ve fallen. The consequences would’ve been unimaginable. He didn’t even have the courage to think about it. That was why he’d been harsh with Megan, so she would remember this lesson.
Leonard had witnessed the whole thing from the side and didn’t know what to say. Taken alone, Megan hadn’t done anything terribly wrong—but put together, Aurora’s stubbornness was also to blame. Still, when two close friends were together, rules often went out the window.
Lucas glanced at Leonard, and just as they were about to pass each other, Lucas said bluntly, “Let me remind you of one thing. This is a law-abiding society—two-timing isn’t a good habit.”
Leonard’s eyes widened slightly. He knew it—Lucas had seen right through him. In front of him, he had no dignity left. It was as if Lucas had stripped him bare. Thinking that, Leonard didn’t even dare to breathe loudly. He lingered for a long while before finally walking in after Lucas. Seeing the empty seat next to Megan, he finally sat down. He didn’t care what anyone else thought. He could look down on himself, but Lucas—never.
At the table, Megan had already returned to her usual self, as if nothing had happened at all. Seeing that, Leonard couldn’t help but admire how good her temper truly was. No matter what happened, she could always adjust her emotions quickly and never let herself stay stuck in them.
After what had just happened, Megan became even more attentive toward Aurora. “Aurora, try this. I asked the chef to make the sandwich fresh, and this soup too—I had the cook prepare it on the spot. It’s all really fresh.” Megan enthusiastically recommended each item she had brought for breakfast, all carefully selected by her. Her sincerity was evident in every choice. As she spoke, Megan kept a close eye on Lucas’ expression. She had put in so much effort—surely her cousin wouldn’t hold on to what had happened earlier, right?
Aurora noticed her little expression and couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright, I get it. Don’t worry. Your cousin’s not going to dwell on it. I already told him it was my fault. Besides, we’re sisters. I know exactly what kind of person you are.”
Hearing that, Megan felt deeply moved. She’d never blamed her cousin to begin with. In fact, she thought Lucas had been right to scold her. After all, it truly had been her oversight. Thankfully, Lucas had come back in time. Otherwise, the consequences would’ve been unthinkable—it would’ve only made things worse. Aurora hadn’t fully recovered yet. If she had fallen again, Megan wouldn’t have been able to escape responsibility. That thought filled her with regret.
“Aurora, don’t defend me. I never meant to blame my cousin. This really was my fault—it was careless of me.” Megan lowered her head. “Since I’m here to look after you, it’s my duty to take care of everything, not leave you wandering around on your own.”
