โAnd even if we did get him on the phone, he probably wouldnโt be able to say anything coherent.โ
Hearing that, Albert was at a loss for words. Was his son really done for? Just like that? He had still been holding onto a shred of hope, but now, it seemed there was nothing left. The chief remained silent, no matter what Albert said.
โHonestly, youโve got to understandโwe donโt even know how to talk to him anymore. Heโs completely out of it, like heโs lost his mind.โ
After hearing the chief reject him so many times, Albert realized the man truly had no way to help. And if that was the case, no amount of begging would change anything. It would be a waste of time. So why bother?
โI understand. Everything I promised, youโll get. Justโฆ please keep an eye on my son.โ
The chief agreed with a few brief words, but privately, his mind was still on Lucas. He knew perfectly well which side carried more weight, and who had the real power. As for Albert, heโd just do what was within reason and take the money while he was at it. Why not? After hanging up, Albert sat in silence, his expression grim. His grip on the phone slowly tightened. He couldnโt just sit here and do nothing. He needed to send someone to Millford to bring Julian back. At the very least, someone had to find out what was really going on. Dragging this out would help no one.
Albert wasnโt stupid. He knew exactly which way the scales were tipping. The most important thing now was keeping Grace steady. Everything else could wait. In Millford.
The chief looked at the ended call and finally breathed a sigh of relief. People these days were really getting harder to fool. If he hadnโt hung up, Lucasโ identity mightโve been exposed. Luckily, he reacted quickly enough. As for Julian, that situation really needed to be addressed. Heโd been held at the station for far too longโit wasnโt sustainable.
Chapter 907
The chief figured he needed someone who could get Tessa to talk. Lucas had mentioned it tooโTessa was far too guarded and needed to be watched closely. Getting her to say anything wasnโt easy. But at this point, there wasnโt much reason for her to keep quiet. And Julian, who had been with her, was now completely out of his mind. Honestly, he was basically gone. So, finding out more shouldnโt be too difficult. The chief immediately called the intern.
The intern was still at the hospital watching over Tessa. Ever since seeing her call with Grace, the intern had lost much of his earlier feelings. He knew nowโthey were from two different worlds. Dragging this out wouldnโt help her at all. Still, the intern watched her far too closely. Tessa had no chance to slip away. Even a simple phone call or text was monitored. Because of this, the intern had noticed she didnโt bother calling or texting anymore. Maybe sheโd realized that doing so was completely pointless.
