Chapter 196
Did Stefan know about Stephanie and Nicolas's relationship, or had Thea misjudged the situation? She wondered.
Thea felt uncertain; the topic felt inappropriate. "Mr. Hendrix is always responsible," she said. "He'll help me, but only because of our contract."
Stefan looked surprised. "Is that really what you think? Thea, have you considered that Nicolas could have easily delegated such a minor issue? Why would he personally rush back from Silvercreek to handle your… attire?"
Thea replied without hesitation, "Although Mr. Hendrix and I are only contractually married, I'm still the Hendrix family's daughter-in-law in name. I represent the family's dignity, and Mr. Hendrix's involvement isn't solely to help me; it's for the family's sake."
Her reasoning, though blunt, was sound. She didn't want to lie to Stefan; it was the truth.
Stefan smiled knowingly. "Nicolas never does anything he'll regret. You might not know him as well as you think. Thea, I'm not underestimating you. When you agreed to the marriage contract, you were often oppressed by the Rowland family, and your life was hard." He paused. "At that time, you didn't have the leverage of Rowland Group shares. He had to deal with your family's troubles. Considering that, how much tangible benefit do you think you provided him?"
Thea's lips moved, wanting to explain.
Stefan stared at her. "I imagine you think Nicolas agreed to this sham marriage because he's worried about your health, but don't rush to argue. If there weren't any feelings involved, how could Nicolas engage in such an unprofitable business deal? Take Winnie, whom you met today. She's Ian's most cherished granddaughter, doted on and valued by the family. Ian has long hoped Nicolas would become her husband…"
Thea fell silent. Stefan was right. With Nicolas's intelligence, he wouldn't miss the difference between a neglected and a beloved daughter.
But how could this be possible? she wondered. Judging by the timeline, Thea hadn't fully escaped her past with Jake, nor had she had much contact with Nicolas.
Does he like his nephew's girlfriend? she thought. No way! He's the flawless Hendrix heir—looks, status, wealth! It's absurd!
Thea wouldn't dare entertain such thoughts, yet… she felt it wasn't impossible. Since they'd started spending time together, Nicolas had shown keen interest in everything related to her. He'd never missed a beat. Without that, Thea wouldn't have fallen for him so easily. Deep down, she still hoped she was special to him.
However, Thea wasn't the naive girl dreaming of love and affection. Rationality pulled her back from sentimental thoughts. No matter where Nicolas's affections lay, Stephanie's shadow remained between them.

Compared to love, what mattered to twenty-six-year-old Thea was self-love and self-respect. She would never accept a three-way relationship.
A knock came at the study door. "Mr. Hendrix, it's time for your medication," the butler called.
Thea opened the door for Ford.
"It's late. Rest. Consider what I said," Stefan told Thea. "The decision about your future is in your hands…"
After Thea left, Stefan took his medicine.
"An open-hearted conversation with Mrs. Hendrix?" Ford asked.
Stefan began, "Just pointed out a few things… Thea is strong-willed. Unlike other women who only covet the Hendrix family's wealth, she's capable, smart, and beautiful—I admire her. She's a good match for Nicolas."
"Mrs. Hendrix would be delighted," Ford said. "She might reconsider her divorce."
Stefan shook his head. "She's too strong-willed; devoted to her feelings, and won't tolerate disrespect. Nicolas indulges Stephanie out of gratitude for her brother's life-saving help."
"But Stephanie is clueless. Nicolas rushed off after a phone call this afternoon, and Thea knows about it. Misunderstandings are inevitable…"
Stefan's dissatisfaction was clear. He waved his hand in resignation.
Ford reassured him, "I believe in Nicolas. He wouldn't do anything inappropriate. You called Mrs. Hendrix to clarify things for Nicolas, right?"
Stefan said, "Those who've been through similar situations can see what's happening, but even if I want to help, there's a limit. Too much interference backfires. My health is deteriorating; I can't be their lifelong glue. Nicolas is rigid. Unless it's life or death, he won't ignore Stephanie."
He sighed. "Nobody is perfect. Nicolas is shrewd in business but struggles with emotions. That worries me. I can only guide him. He needs to find his own solutions so his relationship with Thea stabilizes."
Ford expressed his admiration. "You care deeply for Nicolas."
Stefan smiled. "What parent wouldn't pave the way for their child's future?"
Back in her bedroom, Thea saw a message from Joyce apologizing and immediately video-called her.
"Thea, are you okay? It's all my fault. I fell for Emmalie's tricks, and you bear the blame…" Joyce cried. Her eyes were red and puffy; she seemed to be in a Key Biscayne hotel.
"I understand. You still sold me Emmalie's plans and stood by me, didn't you? I should thank you for your honesty," Thea said.
Joyce was taken aback. "You silly girl, you're my friend! I betrayed your trust. I considered cooperating with Emmalie for my freedom, even if just once. I didn't know how to face…"

Thea smiled. "I'm not without discontent, but I understand your helplessness. It's natural to have such thoughts. Don't feel guilty. We haven't known each other long—not everyone makes sacrifices for friends. You cutting your losses for me is impressive."
Thea spoke sincerely. In high school, a friend had betrayed her. This made Thea appreciate Joyce's ultimate choice. Perhaps friendship wasn't entirely untrustworthy.
Thea said earnestly, "Joyce, I'm very happy to be your friend."
"Me too," Joyce replied, just as a loud knock came at the door.
