Chapter 271

"Mr. Maddox, please don't create too much tension with Joyer because of me," a timid voice drifted into Joyce's ears, marking her first resignation to fate. Ethan's righteous façade and Kelly's coercive tactics boiled down to this: they considered Joyce's sacrifice worthwhile for Lily's peace of mind. In their eyes, Lily's well-being far surpassed Joyce's.

Just as Joyer was about to end the call, a warm hand reached out and took her phone. "Mr. Maddox, I once considered you a respectable elder. But now, it's clear I was mistaken. A man willing to sacrifice his own daughter is unworthy of my respect," Thea's voice was sharp and icy. Ethan, accustomed to decades of admiration as the revered head of Aurelia University, was taken aback by a junior daring to rebuke him.

His face grew colder, but Thea continued undeterred. "I have no interest in whatever charms Mrs. Maddox has used on you. Let me make one thing clear: Joyce has me as her final support, and if she says she won't marry, no one will force her."

The call ended abruptly. Joyce nearly lunged forward to embrace Thea, but remembering Thea's recent injuries, she restrained herself, brushing lightly against Thea's collar. "Thea, you're wonderful! Why couldn't my mom be like you?"

Thea, momentarily speechless, replied, "I couldn't possibly have a daughter as mature as you. Joyce, I've always told you that you have the right to choose your own path. My ambition to build Sparkle Rocks into a powerhouse isn't just about fulfilling my grandfather's wishes; it's about creating the capital to protect myself and those I care about."

Though Sparkle Rocks lacked the strength it needed, Thea was confident that day would soon come. Her words transformed Joyce's sorrow into a smile, though worry lingered in her eyes. "Corey's sudden push for an alliance with the Maddox family feels wrong, no matter how I think about it. Lily's status is beneath the Xander family's notice. The only logical explanation is that it's really aimed at me."

Joyce's intuition was correct. But other than the Rowland family's intervention, she hadn't met Corey. 'Why would that dangerous man target me?' she wondered. Joyce didn't understand, but Thea knew: Corey's true target was Thea. Amelia, backed by April, likely never intended to let Thea be.

"April, who gave you the nerve to use my name as a front?" Corey's message arrived.

Corey hadn't expected April, his subordinate, to act without permission, especially regarding his marriage. "Do you know how many eyes from the Xander family are on me? You didn't consult me before making such a huge decision. Do you have any idea how much damage control I have to do?"

Corey's fury was volcanic, but April showed no fear. Her lips curled into a sly smile as she pressed against him, fluid as a water snake. "You agreed to marry Thea, so why not Joyce? My father's intention was for you to use the marriage to legitimize your business. It doesn't matter who the bride is. Isn't the Maddox family, with their academic heritage, better than the Rowland family, mere merchants?"

April's tone was rational. "Or, is marrying Thea your personal desire?" Her fingers glided to the large snake tattoo on Corey's neck, her nail tracing its vivid red eyes. Chapter 271

Only April dared to taunt Corey so boldly, a result of their lifelong bond and her father's influence. April's father founded the Viper organization and raised Corey. For his sake, Corey indulged April's whims. "April, that's enough," he said, gripping her wrist, a faint smirk on his lips. "Who's been cleaning up your mess with Thea? If Nicolas traces your trail back to you, not even Mr. Sandy could protect you. Nicolas is far deadlier than you think."

Corey's lighthearted tone masked a chilling undertone. April wasn't afraid; she pressed closer. "So what am I supposed to do? I'm destined to clash with Nicolas, especially since I genuinely want Thea dead. From the moment I first saw her, I hated her. Corey, didn't you say that anyone I hate deserves to die? Or is Thea an exception for you?"

Corey's silence deepened the frost in April's gaze. She couldn't bear the thought of Corey having feelings for anyone else. "Corey is mine alone," she thought. These two leaned into each other, a shared intensity in their eyes.

"You'd better stay away from her," Corey said casually, his hand tightening around April's neck.

April remained unfazed. "Corey, are you really thinking of killing me over a woman? You won't do it. You don't even have the nerve." And she was right.

Night fell, and their standoff continued. Meanwhile, at Thea and Joyce's apartment, an unexpected visit unfolded.

Frantic pounding interrupted their roast chicken dinner. Thea, anticipating trouble, had installed a sturdy anti-theft lock.

"Who's..." Joyce began, but Thea covered her mouth. Years abroad had honed Thea's caution. They shouldn't respond.

Silently, Thea grabbed their baseball bat and peered through the peephole, locking eyes with a sinister pair of eyes. "Hello there, Miss Rowland," the man sneered.

Thea recoiled, chilled not by his tone but by the snake tattoo coiling around his neck—Corey's men.

"Miss Rowland, that door won't hold. My boss only wants a word with you," the man warned.

"Something's off. If Corey wanted to see me, he would have called. These guys... they're April's," Thea realized.

"Joyce, call the police," Thea urged, shoving furniture against the door.

Joyce, scared but oddly excited, said, "The cops? Could they get here faster than these guys? Thea, maybe we should open the door. I'm a black belt in taekwondo." She bounced, ready for action.

But Thea shook her head. A black belt wouldn't stand a chance against weapons. These people weren't afraid of the police; they came armed and openly. 07:46 Tue, Nov 19 GM

"Miss Rowland, struggling is useless," the man taunted. "If I were you, I'd come along quietly. The more you resist, the more painful it'll be." SEND GIFT
