Chapter 84

Ivy sighed helplessly. "There's nothing we can do," she said. "You know the situation at home. We can't afford to lose the Hendrix family—that's our cash cow. Emmalie still needs to continue her education, which is a huge expense. Besides, Thea and Jake are obviously in love; they're just going through a rough patch. I know Thea—she's my daughter; I know her well. She's just buying time before figuring out how to break free. Jake's already starting to lose patience with her. If she loses this golden opportunity, where else could she…"

Max, convinced by Ivy's reasoning, sighed in resignation and picked up his phone to call someone to bring Jake over.

In the corner of the room, Emmalie had overheard their conversation. She watched the entire exchange, her face expressionless, before letting out a cold laugh. "They want to marry Thea into the Hendrix family? Dream on. What makes her think she's worthy of that?" she wondered. While Ivy and Max were distracted, Emmalie quickly snapped a photo of the room and sent a message:

Madelyn: [You better move fast. If Thea and Jake end up sleeping together, don't say I didn't warn you.]

Jake received a message from a messenger that Max said Thea wasn't feeling well and wanted him to check on her immediately. Given Thea's recent attitude, Jake was reluctant, but he figured he should at least go out of respect for Max. Plus, his father was still at the party, and if he found out Jake hadn't checked on Thea, he'd definitely get a scolding.

Just then, Jake's phone rang. It was Madelyn. After some hesitation, Jake ignored the call. Instead of calling again, Madelyn sent a video. In the clip, she was standing on a rooftop, the sound of fierce wind in the background. Her voice was shaky, as if she had been crying.

"Jake," she said, "Miss Rowland told me everything. She said you came to Max's birthday party today to discuss marriage arrangements. You haven't kept your promises to me. I can't bear the thought of living under Thea's thumb for the rest of my life. It'd be better if I just died today. I don't want my child to live an unhappy life, either. I'm sorry, but I can't hold on any longer. If you still love me, come see me one last time."

"Thea must be out of her mind!" Jake fumed. "She rejects me on one hand and then provokes Madelyn on the other. What is she trying to do?" he wondered. But Madelyn's life was at stake, and she was carrying his child. Jake had no choice but to go to her. Still, if Stefan found out about Thea, Jake knew he'd be in serious trouble.

As Jake stressed over the dilemma, a bodyguard rushed up to him. "Jake, if it's really too much, maybe you should just go check on Miss Terrell first. I can go to Miss Rowland for you and tell them you've already seen her. Worst case, we switch clothes."

Jake's eyes lit up. "Great idea! Go quickly, just take a glance from afar. That should be enough. That way, when my grandfather asks, I won't get yelled at."

The two quickly swapped clothes.

Chapter 81

Meanwhile, Max was closely monitoring the security cameras. Ten minutes later, the fake Jake appeared on the screen. Max sighed in relief, seeing the man enter the room, and promptly switched off the camera.

"Hi, Max," Emmalie's voice suddenly sounded behind him.

Max jumped in surprise and instinctively moved to block the screen. "Emmalie, what are you doing here?"
