Chapter 133

I didnโ€™t want to be reborn. I only wanted to remember Nicoleโ€™s ugly face and the hypocrisy and cowardice of Chase. My thirst for revenge was overwhelming. I gently pressed my fingers to my belly, vowing vengeance for the unborn child.

When Chase left, the Kennedy family was still debating when to terminate the pregnancy. But I knew Nicole well. If she didnโ€™t want the baby, she would have dealt with it immediately. She was definitely going to keep it.

Chase looked lost, standing at the hospital entrance, unsure what to do next. A blaring car horn jolted him back to reality. He got into the car, looking utterly worn out.

โ€œMr. Reyes, should we head to the office?โ€ the driver asked.

Chase leaned his head on his hand, exhausted. Everything that happened today felt surreal. On a whim, he mentioned a place. โ€œEagle Mountain.โ€

โ€œMr. Reyes, why are you going to Eagle Mountain? Itโ€™ll be dark by the time we get there.โ€

โ€œJust take me there.โ€

Along the way, Chase stopped for his first meal of the day, but his appetite was gone, and he barely touched his food. By the time they reached the base of Eagle Mountain, it was past four in the afternoon.

The mountain stood tall, and while the city enjoyed clear skies, Eagle Mountain was shrouded in heavy snowfall. Few ventured out in such weather, especially as night approached.

The mountain, blanketed in ice and snow, looked majestic and solemn. At its summit stood a chapel. Legend held that the saint enshrined there was powerful, and anyone who sincerely climbed the path would have their wish granted.

Such tales were common throughout history. Every mystical tree, enchanted mountain, and magical stone had its own mysterious story. Many were drawn to these legends, including those at their witโ€™s end, praying fervently for a miracle.

I had visited that chapel twice, seeking peace charmsโ€”once for Chase and once for Grandma. Grandmaโ€™s health was failing, and no medicine seemed to help. I was desperate. Grandma was the most important person in my life. So, soon after I lost the baby, I went to Eagle Mountain for a peace charm for her.

The first time was just before Chase went on a business trip. Perhaps my sincerity moved the heavens, because he returned from that earthquake unscathed.

I never thought Chase, who never believed in such things, would find his way to Eagle Mountain.

He knelt in the snow. The driver was shocked. โ€œMr. Reyes, youโ€™re not seriously planning to go all the way up on your knees? Itโ€™s almost night; youโ€™ll freeze out here!โ€

Chase looked at the snow-covered path, murmuring, โ€œBut she was a frail woman and climbed up just like this.โ€

The driver couldnโ€™t dissuade Chase and got him a thick cloak. He held an umbrella and accompanied him.

I thought Chaseโ€™s mind was solely focused on Nicole and her baby.

A cold wind blew, swirling snowflakes around. The few pilgrims hurried down the mountain, casting sideways glances at Chase. None mocked him; their expressions were filled with pity, assuming he was another soul in despair.

Chase ignored their stares, pressing his forehead into the snow with devotion. I heard him whisper, โ€œMay my wife Amanda return safely.โ€

Chase, itโ€™s too late. The dead cannot come back.
