Chapter 154

Amelia's face looked a few years younger than mine, almost like a high schooler's, with a youthful innocence. Still, since she was eligible for marriage, she must be of legal age, even if she appeared younger. Perhaps the recent suicide attempt contributed to her sickly appearance. No wonder Derek gave me that odd look; marrying someone who looks so young would raise eyebrows.

Nevertheless, I found her face quite pleasing. For one, it resembled my own, taking me back to my younger days. My biggest regret was wasting my best years on Chase. Most of my young life revolved around him. Even after he left me devastated, I clung to the illusion of love. Now, I realized I had been a fool. But fate had given me a second chance, and I was determined to live life to the fullest.

“Amelia, are you hungry? I made your favorite dish,” my mother’s gentle voice floated from the doorway. I smiled at the girl in the mirror. Amelia, I promised to live your life well.

Grace's motherly love, so long missed, filled me as I devoured the soup she’d made. “Slow down, silly. What’s the rush? Don’t choke. There’s more if you like it. I can make it every day,” she said.

My heart ached. Whenever I was sick, all I wanted was my mother’s cooking. But she was always with Nicole, accusing me of faking illness. I never even told her about my miscarriage. I had grown accustomed to being alone. Now, someone cared for me, bringing tears to my eyes. Even though Grace and I hadn’t known each other long, Amelia’s emotions mingled with mine, and I felt only empathy.

“Thanks, Mom. I love your cooking the most,” I said with a sweet smile.

“Good girl.”

That night, my mother and I talked for hours. Sharing stories and nestled in her arms like a child, I truly felt she was my own. After confirming my desire for this marriage, she gently patted my hair and said, “Alright, as long as it’s what you want, I’ve got your back. If he ever dares to hurt you, he won’t get away with it.”

“Of course, Mum,” I agreed.

On the first night of my new life, I should have been anxious, but I slept soundly in my mother’s embrace. The next morning, she dressed me herself, insisting my marriage certificate deserved a celebration. She added a touch of blush and lipstick. Ah, youth! A hint of color made such a difference. The little beauty mark between my eyebrows enhanced my face's grace and elegance.

Derek arrived at 7:40. The moment I opened the door, I saw a flicker of surprise in his eyes. I grinned at Jack. “Let me push him. I need to get used to this anyway.” Jack stepped aside, allowing me to push the wheelchair.

As we were lifting Derek into the car in the parking lot, a familiar voice called out, “Derek.” My expression turned icy. I clenched the wheelchair tightly, gritting my teeth as I murmured the name. It was Chase! I hadn’t expected to see him so soon.
