Chapter 159
I strutted closer, each step in my high heels deliberate and poised. Ryan’s eyesight, weakened by age, wasn't what it once was. From his position, he couldn't quite make out my face. But his voice remained strong and vibrant. "Are you Ms. Amelia?"
"Yes, Mr. Reyes."
As I approached, he saw my face clearly, and joy illuminated his features, instantly forgetting the name I'd given. "Amanda, you're back!"
The moment he called me Amanda, Patricia, pouring water, looked up. My face startled her so much she spilled water across the table. She looked as if she’d seen a ghost. "You… you are…"
Given the news of my disappearance and the slim chance of my survival, everyone assumed I was gone for good. My resemblance to Amanda made them think I was an apparition! With confidence, I approached Ryan. "Hello, Mr. Reyes. I'm Amelia."
"Amelia?" He produced his glasses, examining me closely. "It's uncanny! How can two people look so alike?"
Feigning ignorance, I replied, "Resemblance? What do you mean, Grandfather? I've just returned from abroad and am catching up."
He quickly concealed his conflicting emotions. "It's nothing."
He'd initially seemed prepared to be difficult, but my resemblance to Amanda softened his demeanor. He explained, "I heard about your situation from Derek. We were planning your engagement, but since you both seem agreeable, we're on board. You rushed the marriage certificate, but don't worry, we'll handle the formalities. The Reyes family won't overlook you. And this is your sister-in-law, Patricia."
My former future mother-in-law, now my sister-in-law? Amusing.
I extended a hand to the flustered Patricia. "Hello, Patricia. I'm new to the Reyes family and would appreciate your guidance."
Patricia nodded absentmindedly, still seeming bewildered.
Ryan shot her an impatient glance. "See where everyone is. It's her first time here, and I expect everyone present."
"But Dad, Nicole's been unwell these past few days. She…"
He snorted dismissively. "She's not really a Reyes. Her presence or absence is irrelevant."
He'd never been fond of Nicole and Derek, especially since they'd interfered between Chase and me.
Patricia, liking Nicole but fearing Ryan's displeasure, quickly smiled. "This is important. Nicole will definitely come. I'll check the kitchen; we mustn't overlook Ms. Amelia."
"Patricia, we're family now. No need for formalities. And who is this Nicole girl? I'd love to get something for her."
Patricia forced a smile. "She's my daughter. You don't need to get a gift."
I grinned. "Oh, she's my niece then. With a sister-in-law as lovely as you, Nicole must be a beauty too. I can't wait to meet her!"
