Chapter 176
Having just relived Rosie's life storyโfrom her early years to the complexities of her adulthoodโmy head throbbed, and Ava's sobbing felt like nails on a chalkboard. I sat up slowly, cradling my head in my hands, and gently wiped away Ava's tears with a soft smile. "Mom, I'm alright."
In Rosie's memories, I saw the sad tale of a woman trapped by a controlling man. We were kindred spirits, both imprisoned by the past, unable to move forward. But while I had escaped, she remained mired in her suffering. Rosie's tragic end stemmed partly from her timid nature, a timidity that empowered her tormentor and her family, leading Rosie down her sorrowful path. Of course, blaming the victim is wrong; the true villains were those who harmed her.
Ava suddenly embraced me tightly. "Amelia, you're all I have left. If I lost you too, how would I cope?"
She was the epitome of gentle kindness, never displaying harshness. Yet, misfortune seemed to target gentle souls. I hugged her back, giving her a reassuring pat. "Don't worry, Mom. From now on, I'll take good care of myself. No more stressing you out."
I promised to live a life filled with happiness, for both myself and Rosie. Ava watched me closely, and seeing I was alright, she relaxed. The doctor confirmed that, aside from a cut on my hand needing time to heal, I was fine. Still worried I might faint again, she insisted I stay a little longer.
Not wanting to argue, I agreed with a smile. Resting my head on her lap, I playfully said, "As long as I'm with you, Mom, I don't mind where we are. Can I sleep in your room tonight?"
Ava wiped her tears, a gentle smile playing on her lips as she stroked my hair. "You silly child, all grown up yet still such a cuddler."
She gazed at me warmly. "Sweetheart, it's been ages since you've been this close to me."
"From now on, it's all snuggles and affection, as long as you don't get tired of me."
In that moment, I released the baggage of my past, feeling like a carefree child again, safe in my mother's arms. Ava was overjoyed and ensured I ate well; having been unconscious for nearly a day, I was starving. I didn't hold back and savored every bite.
I couldn't comprehend why someone as lovely and warm as Ava, with such a supportive family, was abandoned by Jared, a man clearly devoid of sense. He turned his back on such a wonderful wife, chasing after someone without classโa choice that was truly appalling. Rosie had always been timid around her father, desperately seeking his affection. Jared constantly belittled her, claiming she wasn't as good as others. Yet, he never truly saw her for who she was. Now that Rosie was gone, I wouldn't let that pathetic excuse for a father and his mistress have the last laugh!
I played the dutiful daughter for Mom, putting her at ease. She went home to fetch essentials, and I seized the chance to slip out of the hospital room.
Grandma! I had to share the good news with her. Tonight, rumors of my supposed demise would surely lower their guard around Grandma. Her room was upstairs, but sneaking in undetected was tricky. Since the orchid incident, Ava had been on high alert, keeping everyone away from Grandma. It had been days since I last saw her, and she must be worried sick.
After considering my options, I decided to head upstairs. This time, I didn't bother hiding my face. As soon as I reached the ward's door, Ava's eyes were on me.
"Amanda!"
"Are you talking to me?" I asked, feigning ignorance.
