Chapter 275: Anna's Pregnancy Is At Risk
I stood to the side, watching, finding the scene utterly absurd. Not long ago, the Sanders and Luke had aimed all their firepower at me, desperately defending Anna. I could still vividly recall it. And now, look at them. The Sanders had crumbled, and even Lukeโwho had once cared for Anna most deeplyโhad become her most ardent despiser. How quickly things had changed.
Josh had dyed his hair black for her wedding and donned a sharp, custom-tailored suit, but his exhaustion was unmistakable, no matter how hard he tried to appear strong. โFine, fine, do whatever you want,โ he muttered, his disappointment palpable. Things had long since spiraled out of his control. His hopes for his daughter had crumbled into regret.
The doctor promptly scheduled Annaโs appointment. Luke followed the group, his expression cold and detached. โAnna, this time Iโm watching you. Letโs see how you fake it.โ
โLuke, do you really hate me that much? After all the years we spent together, Iโฆโ
Luke impatiently interrupted, โShut up! I know exactly what kind of woman you are. I donโt want to hear your ugly voice. I only care about the results. If that baby isnโt mine, Anna, I wonโt let you off the hook.โ
Luke, who once looked at Anna with kindness, now only held eyes full of disgust and hatred. It was as if, at any moment, he might tear her apart. Josh sat on the hallway bench, staring blankly at the slowly closing door. Suddenly, he turned toward me. Perhaps in a daze, I heard him softly whisper, โChloeโฆโ โToo bad; your daughter has been gone for a long time.โ I pretended not to hear and turned away.
Silas had already been taken into surgery, and the doctor handed me his examination results. Several ribs were broken, but none had punctured vital organs. Still, his condition was serious; his entire body was damaged. His internal organs had suffered, and worst of all, his right hand was crippled, shattered beyond repair. I looked at Carter and said, โThis couldnโt have been an accident, right?โ
Carter replied dismissively, โIf he were less useful, his left hand wouldโve been gone too.โ Silas was still undergoing surgery when Anna was discharged. Luke stood at the door, cold as ever, and asked, โWhen will we know the results?โ
โMr. Luke, typically it takes about three to four weeks, but with an expedited request, the fastest would be seven days.โ
โIf anyone interferes with or tampers with the results, you will all be fired!โ
โUnderstood, Mr. Luke.โ The doctor had never seen Luke in such a violent mood. Carter quietly removed Annaโs people, ensuring no one else could cause trouble.
Seven days. That was all it would take to determine whose child Anna was carrying. She had been injured and was bleeding, so she needed to stay in the hospital to protect her pregnancy. Annaโd just had an amniocentesis, and now she needed an injection to stabilize the pregnancy. When I arrived, she looked drained and defeated, her face pale and weak. Her swollen face had subsided, revealing her original features. As soon as she saw me, she quickly sat up, clearly not wanting me to see her in such a pitiful state.
โItโs you, isnโt it?โ She glared viciously.
โMs. Sander, I donโt quite understand what you mean.โ I looked at her without malice, my expression calm and neutral. Annaโs cold eyes fixed on me. โCarter has been investigating me, and itโs you whoโs helping Sadie behind the scenes! Otherwise, how could that idiot Sadie expose what happened between Silas and me?โ
โAnna, if you donโt want anyone to find out, maybe you should stop doing shady things. You were the one who schemed against me first, trying to use Melissa to ruin my reputation. You even arranged for those men to hurt me. Iโm really curiousโwhat grudge do we have that you have to be so cruel to me?โ
Anna locked eyes with me, seemingly trying to figure out who I was. โDidnโt you start it, Zoey? I have no grudge against you, yet you plotted against me at the Boltons and humiliated me at the art competition. Now you have the nerve to question me?โ Anna dropped her pretense and went straight to the point.
Hearing her accusations, I couldnโt help but laugh. โAnna, have you forgotten? The painting competition was where you stole Chloeโs work. As for the Boltonsโwasnโt that you trying to get rid of me? I merely took advantage of the situation. Where do you get the nerve to question me?โ In her eyes, she could never be wrongโeveryone else was to blame.
โWhat are you trying to do? Iโve died once; now I just want to live properly. By the way, Ms. Sander, Iโm sure youโre dying to know about your lover. Hereโs his medical report.โ I handed Anna the document, and as soon as she saw Silasโs condition, her eyes filled with tears. โYou did this on purpose, didnโt you?โ
Iโm just curious. Back at the Boltons, you acted like you were madly in love with Luke. Now, all of a sudden, youโre genuinely concerned about this man. Could he be the one you truly care for?โ A trace of guilt crossed Annaโs eyes. โYouโre talking nonsense. Itโs not like what you think!โ
โThen what kind of relationship is it? Iโm all ears.โ
โWhy should I tell you? Zoey, if you dare to mess with us, youโll pay for it. One day, youโll end up dying tragically, and then youโll understand.โ Her threat almost pushed me to reveal my identity. But I knew it wasnโt the right time yet. I still needed Anna to draw out the mastermind. โYouโre in no position to do anything to me. But as for your lover, he wonโt be so lucky. You lied to Luke, and he wonโt let him get away with it!โ
โWhatโs Luke going to do to him?โ
I shrugged nonchalantly. โWho knows? Menโs jealousy isnโt any less than womenโs. Anna, if youโre going to blame anyone, blame yourself for playing both sides. Isnโt your action backfiring now? Anyway, itโs getting late; I need to leave.โ
โDonโt go, Zoey, you need to explain yourself!โ She tried to grab me, but was so weak that she fell from her bed. Anna was already at risk with her pregnancy, and the sudden movement caused her to bleed. The bright red stain spread across her clothes. The sight of that bright red reminded me of myself, six months ago. I collapsed to the floor due to her provocation, dragging myself slowly toward the door, leaving a trail of blood behind me.
โBlood! So much blood!โ Anna didnโt know that what goes around comes around. I hadnโt intentionally provoked her, but now she was following the same path I had taken. She looked at me, frantic. โZoey, get the doctor!โ
