Chapter 281: Silasโs DNA Test Results
I quietly left the room just as Jeffrey finished lunch and began reading in the study. Sheila, on the other hand, spent her time at the spa or shopping. When at home, she cooked, took care of Jeffrey, and attempted to win his favor. She appeared like any other wealthy ladyโnothing suspicious about her. Therefore, Carter and I were unsure if she was connected to Annaโs organization in any way.
The Boltons, both openly and secretly, had many cameras installed by Carter, making it easy to investigate who had poisoned Silas. Our staff hadnโt changed recently, so the only likely culprit was the cook. Checking the kitchenโs surveillance footage would clarify everything.
The person who poisoned Silas was an elderly woman who had worked at the Boltons for yearsโnot Sheila. However, a new question arose: Did Sheila place this individual, or was she merely another pawn in the organization?
Damian, overcome with fear, said, โWeโve already dismissed many people recently. We only kept her because she had been with the family for a long time. Sheโs efficient, trustworthy, and has a simple background. I never imagined she would poison him!โ
I responded, โShe might have been innocent before, but she could have been coerced. The food wasnโt even for Silas; and if she was pressured, thereโs no way to defend against that.โ
Damian reasoned, โIf thatโs the case, we wonโt be able to trace it back to Sheila.โ
โIf sheโs guilty, she will slip up eventually. Weโll be more careful moving forward, and weโll replace the kitchen staff.โ
โI understand.โ
I glanced at the clock and said, โItโs almost time. Weโll stick to the plan.โ
โUnderstood.โ
Damian hurried away. The guards bustled about, preparing body bags and cleaning chemicals, deliberately creating the illusion for the servants that Silas had died.
Shortly after, Carter returned home. I greeted him, asking, โHave you eaten yet?โ
โNot yet.โ
โIโll make something for you. Someone poisoned Silas today.โ
Carter said, โDamian has filled me in. Chloe, Iโm not hungry right now. Weโve clarified the cause of Jakeโs death.โ
It turned out he had been investigating this matter all morning. I knew he had secretly partnered with Nelson on it.
โHow did he die?โ
โHe drowned. Jake had been drinking, but the autopsy revealed that a substance was found in his body that can cause someone to lose control of their mind.โ
I wasnโt surprised. โSo, he was intoxicated before he died, making it look like an accidental drowning.โ
โExactly. Someone gave him the drug.โ
โIf we can trace the people he dined with that night, this will be easier to solve.โ
Carter furrowed his brow. โItโs difficult. He came back for a business deal, and it was a networking dinner with some CEOs. After the meal, they went to a nightclub. You know how chaotic those places can be. It would have been easy for someone to slip him something. The police have already taken statements from everyone, especially the two female escorts he was with. Theyโre the most suspicious.โ
I sighed, โTheir method of killing is almost impossible to prevent! They either tamper with the car or poison drinks. Even their reach extends to the Boltons.โ
Carter echoed, โLuckily, they donโt know youโve been reborn, or you would be in danger too, Chloe. You need to be extra cautious from now on. Do you understand?โ
โI know, but we canโt just keep reacting. We need to take action.โ
Carter took a sip of water. He said, โChloe, itโs not just you who is in a hurry. The other side is desperate too. The more they want to achieve their goal quickly, the more theyโll panic and make mistakes. Thatโs when weโll find our opportunity. Iโve been following the lead from the bribed servant, and the police are tracing Jakeโs death as well. With a body, it wonโt be as difficult to investigate as when you went through itโit will just take some time.โ
He had been busy all morning and hadnโt eaten anything, so I decided to make him something. As I passed through the living room, I noticed Sheila was on the phone, seemingly inviting a nail technician. She looked serene and carefree.
I took the food upstairs while Carter stood by the window, talking on the phone, his expression serious. I dared not interrupt him, so I placed the food on the table and patiently waited for him to finish his call. His mood was usually calm, but this time, I detected a hint of surprise in his voice. What could have happened to cause this reaction?
When he finally hung up, I called out to him, โEat before it gets cold.โ
Carter seemed lost in thought, as though he hadnโt heard me.
โCarter, whatโs wrong?โ
He looked at me, a bit dazed. โWโWhat?โ
โWho was on the phone? Whatโs with that expression?โ
Carter stared at me, clearly struggling. Slowly, he spoke, his voice heavy. โSilasโs DNA results came back.โ
I hadnโt expected it to be about Silas. The fact that Carter looked so stunned worried me. โWhat did they say? Does it have anything to do with us?โ
Carterโs voice was low. โHis Y-chromosome matches mine. So, heโsโฆโ
