Chapter 289 Sadieโs Scheme
I calmly sipped my soup, looking across the table. โGo ahead. What is it you want to talk about?โ
โI know Iโve spoiled Sadie,โ Bill began, his voice subdued, โand I know Iโve neglected you and your mother all these years. I can understand why you resent me.โ Bill, now stripped of his usual bravado, avoided my gaze. โZoey, the mistakes Iโve made have brought nothing but misery to your mother and me.โ
โIsnโt that all on you?โ I replied coldly.
โYes,โ he admitted, sighing. โThatโs why, no matter how much your mother belittles me or hates me, I can endure it. I genuinely want to make amends. I can let go of Monica, but Sadieโฆ sheโs my flesh and blood.โ
The phrase โflesh and bloodโ made me laugh. โWhat if,โ I asked, testing the waters, โshe isnโt?โ
Bill froze for a moment before snapping back, โThatโs impossible!โ There it wasโclassic Bill, too thick-headed to even consider the possibility.
โZoey, Iโve thought it through,โ he continued, his tone almost pleading. โIn a few days, Iโll send her back to her country with some moneyโenough to cut ties for good. Consider it a parting gift, maybe even her dowry. Then, Iโll focus on us. No more running between families. You and Philippa wonโt have to suffer anymore.โ
I arched an eyebrow and asked, โAnd how much, exactly, are you planning to give her?โ
โYour sister has always had expensive tastes. If I give her too little, it wonโt lastโฆโ
I couldnโt help but sneer and retort, โYou think money will sever your ties? As long as youโre unwilling to truly cut ties, you never will. Today, you give her money to send her away; tomorrow, sheโll come asking for more. Will you give it to her or not? And what about when she gets married? Will you walk her down the aisle? If she has children, will you stay away from them? If she faces trouble in her marriage, wonโt you step in to protect her? Donโt kid yourself. Youโre just trying to sweep everything under the rug.โ
โIโm sorry,โ I continued, my voice firm. โFor twenty years, weโve been bullied by Monica and Sadie. I canโt empathize, and I certainly canโt forgive them for what theyโve done to Mom and me. Iโve said it before: choose. If you want them, divorce Mom.โ
Billโs temper flared at my resolve. He snapped, โWhy are you so stubborn? What good does it do to break up your motherโs marriage to me?โ
โIt may not be good for me,โ I replied evenly, โbut at least Mom will finally be free of this miserable marriage. She wonโt have to live under your thumb anymore. She can live a life of her choosing.โ
โDonโt be ridiculous! When have I ever controlled her? When have I denied her freedom?โ
โDad, every day she spends with you is a day of suffering.โ
โThatโs absurd!โ Bill shouted, storming out of the room.
I watched his retreating figure as he ascended the stairs, then quietly put down my spoon and left.
Back at the estate, Carter was on the phone, discussing an upcoming public offering. When I walked in, he ended the call and turned to me.
โYouโre back. Howโs Philippa?โ
โSheโs doing well, health-wise,โ I said. โBut seeing Bill is exhausting, Carter. I donโt want to wait any longer. Whatโs the latest on that Cinderella man?โ
โThat guy? Heโs been bold,โ Carter said, his voice tinged with amusement. He gestured for me to come over. I obediently sat on his lap, letting him wrap me in his warm embrace.
โWhat did he do?โ
Carter said, โHe got his hands on some drugs from the black market. Iโm guessing theyโre meant for Bill.โ
My stomach dropped. I remembered how heโd asked Monica to take out an insurance policy on Bill. I hadnโt thought heโd actually go this far.
โWhat do the drugs do?โ I asked.
โIn small doses, not much. But over time, they mess with the brain, causing confusion and memory loss. My guess? He wants to weaken Billโs mind, get him to sign over some documents, and once Billโs no longer useful, arrange for him to have an โaccidentalโ death. The kicker? The insurance payout would be massive. Afterward, most of the Gardnersโ assets would go to Sadie.โ
โThatโs vile!โ I spat, my anger boiling over.
Carter stroked my hair and soothed me. โDonโt worry. The only way he can administer the drugs is through Monica, and Bill hasnโt been eating there much. He bought them a place to stay, but he barely visits.โ
I froze. โWait, Sadie mentioned cooking for him today. He mustโve eaten something.โ
โOne or two meals wonโt matter,โ Carter assured me, โas long as itโs not regular. If you want to expose her, just show him the paternity test results.โ
โNo,โ I said, shaking my head. โThatโs too easy. He loves that daughter of his so much. I want him to see exactly how sheโs planning to destroy him.โ
โWhatโs your plan?โ
โHeโs avoiding Monica, so the only one close enough to act is Sadie. If heโs coming back for dinner, the lunchtime window is all he has.โ I smiled slowly and said, โI want to catch her in the act.โ
โAlright, whatever makes you happy.โ Carter pampered me as always.
โDid the police get anything out of Linda?โ I asked.
Carterโs expression shifted slightly. โSheโs dead. She died in custody.โ
I was silent for a long time. Another life, gone just like that. Silas had bitten off his own tongue rather than reveal anything about the organization. And Lindaโฆ Linda had chosen death outright.
โWhat about Anna?โ
โSheโs still trying to save the baby, but things donโt look good. If she suffers another major blow, she probably wonโt be able to keep it.โ
This must be karma. I hadnโt laid a finger on her child, yet she still couldnโt hold on to it. Her emotions right now must be the same as mine back thenโfighting desperately to save that fragile little life.
โAlright, get some rest. Stop overthinking it. Iโll take care of everything else,โ Carter said, his tone gentle but firm.
โOkay.โ
โIโve already transferred Zoeyโs school records to the country. The school has been notified, so all you have to do is show up for enrollment when the semester starts.โ
โThank you,โ I said softly.
Carter chuckled and ruffled my hair. โSilly girl, thanking me? Since when do we need that between us?โ
I wrapped my arms around his neck and nuzzled closer to him. โCarter, youโre the best.โ
The next day, I visited Billโs branch office. Iโd never shown up before, so no one recognized me. When I introduced myself as his daughter, the receptionist scoffed. โMs. Gardner is already upstairs with Mr. Gardner. Nice try, but impersonating someoneโs daughter? Thatโs a new low.โ
I gave her a small, polite smile. โEver considered the possibility that Iโm the real Ms. Gardner?โ
Her eyes flicked over my couture outfit, and she dared not act presumptuous. โIโll call his secretary. Wait here.โ
โLet me call his office to check. One moment, please.โ
โTell him Zoeyโs here.โ
A few moments later, Billโs head secretary appeared, all smiles and deference. โMs. Zoey! Why didnโt you just call me directly?โ
โI didnโt have your number,โ I said with a smile.
โThatโs my fault. Let me give it to you now.โ
In the past, no one around Bill had treated me with any regard. But with my status as Mrs. Bolton, everything had changed. People like his secretary were suddenly eager to please.
I followed him upstairs to Billโs office. Just as Iโd suspected, Sadie was there. Sheโd brought lunch and a tray of desserts, playing the perfect dotingโฆ
