Chapter 327: Chip in Silasโ Body
Iโm not sure if it was due to the spiritual experience, but the grandmasterโs words felt like a massive weight pressing down on my chest. Despite knowing Carter was safe, I couldnโt shake the sense of dread. Every one of his movements and words seemed larger than life in my thoughts.
Carter caught my uneasy gaze and offered a resigned smile. โChloe, how could I not want you to carry our child? As you mentioned, we still donโt understand what happened to our family or the Sanders.โ He gently patted my head. โAnd with your current state of mind, having a child wouldnโt be the best choice, right?โ
As I listened to his calm words, I observed his flawless features intently. It was only then that I felt a sense of relief. โIโm sorry, Carter. How could I say that to you? So much has happened lately, and Iโve been so anxious.โ
Carter gave a soft smile. โI understand.โ
I rested my head against his chest. โWe will have children in the future, I promise.โ
โOf course.โ He lowered himself, carefully lifting me into his arms and placing me gently on the bed. โDonโt worry too much; Iโll stay right here with you.โ
I clung to his waist, unable to let go. โCarter, every time I close my eyes, my mind spins, haunted by thoughts of the Sanders and the Boltons. I canโt seem to stop.โ
โWith the limited evidence we have, thereโs no point in dwelling on it.โ
โSo, what do you think theyโll do next? Even though weโve moved out, itโs like theyโre ghosts, lurking everywhere. In the time it took for Sheila to have surgery, they managed to plant a bomb chip in her body. Youโve already done a thorough inspection of the hospital, but if their people are still inside, we wonโt be safe in the future either.โ
โNo!โ Carter said firmly.
I lifted my gaze to him. โNo? What do you mean?โ
Carterโs face remained stern. โThe exam results are in, and the chip wasnโt placed during her surgery.โ
A sudden realization hit me. โAre you saying that maybe Sheila had the chip implanted by that organization long before?โ
โThat chip can do more than just explode; it might have other purposes too.โ I recalled the sabotaged brooch from earlier. Annaโs team had tech specialists. โThis chip controls their lives. They have no choice but to follow orders. Even if they donโt take their own lives, they can be remotely manipulated and disposed of.โ
I clenched my fist tightly. โHow heartless these people are!โ
โHowever, this isnโt necessarily bad news for us.โ
โReally?โ I was confused.
โSilasโ body is still at the police station. If he has a chip like this one, it could reveal some important details.โ
A sudden chill ran through me. โWhat if they discover Sheila? Could they also activate the chip in Silasโ body?โ
Carter remarked, โDonโt worry. After Sheilaโs incident, I contacted Captain Tucker to update him. It looks like the other side doesnโt intend to reveal the chip, or they would have triggered it when they first captured Silas.โ
โYouโre right. Todayโs actions seem more like the final outburst of a madman,โ I responded. โI have no idea how much profit that underground organization generated. But now that itโs gone, the other side will be livid. With more of their secrets out in the open, even Anna, their pawn, exposed, theyโre likely to hold off for now. If they act again, theyโll risk losing everything if itโs revealed. So, for now, weโre in the safest position.โ
I nodded. โThat makes sense. We caught them by surprise this time. They must be scrambling to cover their tracks. The secret base should give us some clues.โ
โRight, does that mean we can finally rest easy?โ
It became clear he was saying all of this just to reassure me. I couldnโt hide my frustration. โBut itโs been two months since my last period. Even if Iโm not pregnant, itโs still a problem.โ
โItโs a small issue. See an experienced doctor to help balance your body. Donโt worry, youโll be fine. Go ahead and rest.โ He kissed the top of my head, his breath soothing me, easing the heaviness in my heart. My racing thoughts gradually slowed.
I rested against him, slipping into a deep sleep, unaware that Carter was watching my peaceful face, replaying the sight over and over.
The following morning, the entire Snowville was blanketed by dark winter clouds, with only occasional glimpses of clear skies. The snow in the yard had melted, and the red plum blossoms on the branches were in full bloom. A bird, with a plum blossom in its beak, spread its wings beneath the warm golden sunlight. My gloomy mood vanished, completely lifted by the peaceful, healing sight. Carter had departed earlier after getting a call from the police, who had apparently verified that the same chip had been found in Silasโ body and successfully removed. If this chip could track the other personโs location, it would be even more helpful.
I ate breakfast and picked up a few pregnancy test packs from a nearby convenience store. I felt torn, as it seemed like this was the right time to be pregnant, yet I also wanted to be prepared. One reason was to fill the void left by longing for a child, and the other was that Carter had mentioned wanting children a long time ago. I couldnโt help but wonder if our baby would be a boy or a girl. Would they resemble me or him? When you love someone, you long to create a shared bond with a child. That moment marks the next chapter of our lives. The wait felt unbearable, even though it was just a few minutes, as I kept my eyes on the clock on my phone. I wanted to check, but I was too afraid. When the time finally arrived, I anxiously glanced at the pregnancy test pack, my heart racing.
