Chapter 353: Long Time No See

One concluded, โ€œSo, the DNA and this tattoo could be our leads. They might help us track down where Annal is hiding.โ€

โ€œYes. If Mrs. Bolton finds any leads, donโ€™t hesitate to reach out to us.โ€

โ€œOf course. Captain Tucker, take care.โ€

After seeing Nelson off, I finally exhaled, releasing a breath I hadnโ€™t realized Iโ€™d been holding. My tense body relaxed as relief washed over me. Carter moved from his wheelchair and sat beside me, curled up on the sofa. I rested my head on his lap.

โ€œItโ€™s late. You should eat something,โ€ he murmured softly, his fingers gently combing through my hair.

I thought I had grown numb to horrors after everything Iโ€™d been through. But just recalling the photosโ€”and seeing Sadieโ€™s swollen, deformed face this morningโ€”killed my appetite entirely.

โ€œCanโ€™t eat,โ€ I murmured.

โ€œYouโ€™ve lost weight,โ€ he said with a faint sigh.

โ€œWell, you should blame them for their cruelty. They never leave a body intact.โ€

Carter sighed deeply and said, โ€œChloe, Iโ€™ve thought about sending you to stay with your mother. These past few months, youโ€™ve gone through too much. Who knows whatโ€™s still to come?โ€

Even if Anna couldnโ€™t harm me directly, her constant games were enough to make anyone sick.

โ€œI canโ€™t hide forever, Carter, and neither can they. Anna has already started leaving traces. Itโ€™s only a matter of time before we catch her. On the other hand, the Carlyn brothers are remarkably patient.โ€

Carter advised, โ€œThis canโ€™t be rushed. I need to go on a business trip to Zorya. Come with me. Staying here is not just dangerousโ€”itโ€™s draining you. Iโ€™m worried youโ€™re on the brink of a breakdown.โ€

I hesitated for a moment, then nodded. โ€œMomโ€™s pregnancy is pretty far along. I can visit her while weโ€™re there.โ€

โ€œWhatever you want,โ€ he said with a faint smile, brushing the tip of my nose playfully. โ€œAnd donโ€™t you want to see the life Iโ€™ve been building over the years?โ€

โ€œI do. Itโ€™s not just about your life; I also want to meet your friends.โ€

โ€œCan you eat something now?โ€

He finally brought a small smile to my face. โ€œAlright.โ€

As long as I was with him, the unanswered questions didnโ€™t seem so important.

Chapter 358: Long Time No See

The next day, I ran into someone familiar in the first-class cabin. Ashley, clearly caught off guard, stammered, โ€œZโ€ฆ Mrs. Bolton?โ€

โ€œWhat a coincidence,โ€ I replied coolly. โ€œYouโ€™re flying toโ€ฆ?โ€

He sighed and said, โ€œWhen I went to Snowville, I thought Bill would put me in a key position. Thatโ€™s why I followed him.โ€

I scoffed coldly. โ€œKey position? You mean you wanted control of his branch company?โ€

Bill doesnโ€™t have a son. Ashley had thought he could control Gardnerโ€™s empire by becoming Billโ€™s son-in-law. When he heard Bill was expanding his business empire, he jumped at the opportunity. But, as it turns out, fate had other plans.

Once a somewhat respected member of the Hudsons, Ashley was able to live comfortably at home. But heโ€™d made such a mess of things that no one at home would ever give him another chance. Heโ€™d lost his foothold in Snowville and fled in fear of Annaโ€™s schemes. This was the advantage of being a spineless opportunist; when things got tough, he could always run.

โ€œZoey, donโ€™t be so harsh. I only wanted to lighten Billโ€™s burden. Actually, Iโ€™m in a bit of a tight spot financially right now. Could you, for old timeโ€™s sake, lend me some money? Iโ€™ll pay you back as soon as I can.โ€

Before I could respond, Carterโ€™s voice cut in, sharp and icy. โ€œDo you think Iโ€™m dead?โ€

Ashley hadnโ€™t noticed Carter seated behind the cabin divider. Panic flashed across his face as he quickly retreated to his seat, pulling the divider closed as though it could shield him from everyoneโ€™s attention.

Carterโ€™s brow furrowed as he warned, โ€œIf he bothers you again, Iโ€™ll break his legs.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but smile. โ€œSounds good to me.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t sleep well last night,โ€ Carter said softly. โ€œGet some rest. The flightโ€™s long.โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€

I nodded, slipping on my eye mask and headphones. I let the drama of Snowville drift from my mind. For the next few days, I just wanted to enjoy being with Carter.

Jaford was the complete opposite of Snowville. While Snowville endured endless winters that stretched over half the year, this city was a place of eternal spring. Blossoms were everywhere, and the gentle sea breeze carried the scent of flowers. I had been to Jaford before, but only for rushed business tripsโ€”signing contracts and leaving as quickly as Iโ€™d arrived. Knowing this was where Carter had spent many years gave the place a newfound familiarity.

Chapter 353: Long Time No See

The moment we left the airport, vibrant tulips of every color greeted us, lifting my mood instantly.

โ€œThis evening a friend is hosting us for dinner,โ€ Carter said.

โ€œYou donโ€™t often talk about your friends. Who is he?โ€ I asked curiously.

โ€œHarlan Pearson. Heโ€™s one of the people who helped me a lot in the early years. The others arenโ€™t in the country right now, but Iโ€™ll introduce you to them someday.โ€

โ€œSure. Will his wife be there? Should I bring her a gift?โ€

Carter hesitated, struggling to express himself.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Are things not good between them?โ€

โ€œWell, son of aโ€ฆ Iโ€™m not sure if theyโ€™ve made any progress in the past six months.โ€

I decided not to pry further into their personal matters and simply followed Carter to the restaurant.

As we reached the private dining room, a deep, commanding voice echoed from within. โ€œJanice, havenโ€™t you caused enough trouble? The guests are about to arrive; where do you think youโ€™re going? Is this how you carry yourself as my wife?โ€

A woman declared, โ€œI donโ€™t care. The divorce papers are already on your desk. All you need to do is sign them. Iโ€™ve told you beforeโ€”I have no interest in playing these childish games with your other women.โ€

โ€œHarlan, look at her! Sheโ€™s being unreasonable! Thereโ€™s no game! I just dropped by to deliver you a bottle of wine, for heavenโ€™s sake. Iโ€™ll be gone in a moment,โ€ said another woman, her voice dripping with feigned innocence.

Then, a lazy, almost mocking female voice chimed in, โ€œDonโ€™t start this. If Iโ€™d known you were coming, I wouldnโ€™t have shown up. Fine. Iโ€™ll go. Wouldnโ€™t want to get in your way.โ€

As the door swung open, a woman stepped out. She wore a black gown; her hair was pinned up, adorned with a simple pearl hairpin. She was stunning, with fair skin and rosy lips. A red mark between her brows gave her an almost otherworldly beauty. Her eyes met mine, freezing both of us in place. Then her gaze flickered to Carter, sitting in his wheelchair. Tears welled up in her eyes.

โ€œYouโ€”itโ€™s you two.โ€

Her appearance had changed, but those eyesโ€”those weary, defiant eyesโ€”Iโ€™d recognize anywhere. We embraced tightly, memories of that day when we parted ways flooding my mind.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what lies beyond this life,โ€ sheโ€™d said back then. โ€œBut no matter what happens, Zoey, I hope you live a bright and joyful life. For yourself, just this once.โ€

โ€œI will,โ€ Iโ€™d promised.

โ€œGoodbye, Chloe,โ€ she said as she chose death, while I chose life. Weโ€™d taken two very different paths. Lately, I had wondered if she had been reborn or if she had simply vanished from the world. But seeing her now, I knew one thing for certain: she was back.

โ€œLong time no see,โ€ I whispered.

She leaned closer, her voice trembling as she replied, โ€œLong time no see, Chloe.โ€
