Chapter 467 Carl, Iโ€™m Pregnant

I wasnโ€™t sure if it was everything that had happened recently, or if I hadnโ€™t been resting enough, but just now, everything went black, and I briefly lost consciousness. This had never happened before; it was the first time. Thankfully, someone caught me in time. A strong hand gripped my wrist, keeping me from falling.

A soft male voice came from beside me. โ€œAre you okay?โ€

I waited a moment, and when the black fog dissipated, my mind cleared, and I slowly looked up at him. The man who had caught me had a gentle expression and a handsome face. He was wearing a white shirt and black pants. He exuded a gentle warmth, like a spring breeze. He was so pure, almost like crystal. That was my first impression.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I said, pulling my hand back and taking a step to keep my distance. โ€œYour complexion doesnโ€™t look good. Would you like me to take you to the hospital? Itโ€™s dangerous for a girl to faint on the side of the road.โ€

I politely declined. โ€œI appreciate the offer, but itโ€™s not necessary. My family will take me there.โ€

Noticing my wariness, the man chuckled. โ€œDonโ€™t misunderstand, Iโ€™m not a bad person. Iโ€™m a doctor, and I came to your school today to give a lecture.โ€

A group approached from a distance, and the principal hurried over. โ€œDr. Donovan, thank you for your help today.โ€ He seemed surprised to see me, likely because Carter had donated a building, and the principal treated me like heโ€™d just seen a god of wealth.

โ€œZoey, youโ€™re here, too.โ€

โ€œHello, sir.โ€

โ€œZoey, you know Dr. Donovan?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œI almost fainted, and Dr. Donovan caught me.โ€ I didnโ€™t expect him to be a doctor. His fingers were long and slender, his wrists defined, and he wore a string of black prayer beads around his wrist. He had an aura of calm and detachment, making it hard to connect him with the image of a doctor who saves lives. His demeanor felt more like that of an artist or a designer.

The man reached out to take his suit from his assistant and pulled out his ID to show me. โ€œStudent, I really am a doctor. Luther Donovan, Orthopedics.โ€

It seemed even more unbelievable now. It was hard to picture such a refined man as an orthopedic doctor swinging a big hammer. For some reason, a joke popped into my head: Big hammer, 80 dollars; small hammer, 40 dollars.

He offered again, โ€œIโ€™m heading back to the hospital anyway. Let me take you for an examination.โ€

When the principal heard this, he quickly added, โ€œZoey, youโ€™re not feeling well? You canโ€™t delay that! Donโ€™t let Dr. Donovanโ€™s age fool you; heโ€™s a highly accomplished, versatile doctor with many awards. Heโ€™s not just an orthopedic specialist. You should go with him for a check-up. Iโ€™ll call Mr. Bolton right away and have him meet you at the hospital.โ€

The principalโ€™s anxiety made me almost feel like I had a terminal illness.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll have to trouble you, Dr. Donovan,โ€ I said, masking the coldness in my eyes, wanting to see what he was up to.

โ€œNo problem, itโ€™s my duty.โ€

I followed him into a Cayenne, with his assistant driving. I hesitated before asking, โ€œDr. Donovan, are you always this caring?โ€

I secretly sent a message to Damian, telling him not to alert anyone and to follow at a safe distance. After all, these days, even helping an elderly person who falls requires a video for proof. I couldnโ€™t believe there was such a genuinely caring doctor.

Luther, who looked to be in his late twenties, absentmindedly played with the prayer beads in his hand and casually replied, โ€œMaybe I will ignore others, but I canโ€™t just ignore a pregnant woman.โ€

I felt like the orthopedic surgeonโ€™s metaphorical hammer had struck me. Staring at him in disbelief, I asked, โ€œDr. Donovan, what do you mean, pregnant?โ€

He turned to me and replied, โ€œYou didnโ€™t know? Youโ€™re pregnant.โ€

Pregnant? This had to be a joke. It had been a while since I took that pill back in the small town, and Carter and I had had sex several times sinceโ€ฆ At that time, he thought I wouldnโ€™t get pregnant, while I wanted a child, so Iโ€™d been pestering him, nagging him, and never used any protection. Pregnancy was something I had long hoped for, but I never expected it to happen so quickly.

โ€œDr. Donovan, are you serious?โ€

โ€œWhen I helped you up earlier, I checked your pulse. Youโ€™re probably only a few weeks alongโ€”less than a month.โ€ He even gave me an accurate timeline. I stared at him in surprise. โ€œArenโ€™t you an orthopedic doctor?โ€

โ€œI have some knowledge of holistic medicine, so I was worried that, as a young girl, you might mistake this for low blood sugar. Early pregnancy is a critical time, and miscarriage can happen easily if youโ€™re not careful.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t want to tell you the truth in public, so I suggested taking you to the hospital instead. I hope you donโ€™t misunderstand.โ€

His words made me feel embarrassed. He had good intentions, thinking of everything for me, while I had been questioning his motives.

โ€œSorry, Dr. Donovan.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine. I understand. Itโ€™s a good thing to be cautious, especially at your age.โ€

But what truly shocked me was the news about the baby. I was pregnant again! A child with Carter. Only we truly understood how hard our journey had been. In my past life, I never got the chance to marry him, and in this one, after so many struggles, weโ€™d finally found our way to each other. This child was a treasure to me.

I gently placed my hand on my flat stomach, my eyes stinging with emotion. โ€œThank you for the reminder, Dr. Donovan.โ€

In the early stages of pregnancy, I had no real symptoms. It was a stark contrast to when I carried Lukeโ€™s child in my past life, when morning sickness had been overwhelming. Thatโ€™s why I didnโ€™t notice anything; even my appetite had been much better lately, and everything I ate tasted great. The bloody events on Rosbel Island didnโ€™t affect me much either; I had been sleeping soundly at night. I thought I was just getting used to it, but now I realized it was because I was pregnant.

โ€œZoey, you look so young. Youโ€™re already married and pregnant?โ€

I smiled and said, โ€œWhen you find the right person, you get married. I donโ€™t have grand ambitions; just living a safe, peaceful life is enough for me.โ€ For most people, it was a simple wish, but for me, it felt like a luxury. Even though this body wasnโ€™t yet 21, I wanted to get pregnant as soon as possible. This child would make up for so many of my past regrets.

The car quickly reached the hospital, and after escorting me to the gynecology department, Luther left. I had just finished my check-up and was coming out of the ultrasound room when I spotted Carter waiting by the door, with Luke right behind him.

โ€œAre you okay, Zoey?โ€ Luke asked.

I had no idea how the principal managed to reach Carter. I didnโ€™t tell him in advance to give him a surprise. Carterโ€™s face showed clear concern. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

Seeing the redness in my eyes and the tears about to fall, Carter became even more anxious, likely imagining every possible worst-case scenario. He gently rested his hands on my shoulders, offering silent comfort. โ€œItโ€™s okay. Whatever it is, it can be treated. You donโ€™t have to carry everything by yourself. Just tell me.โ€

I pulled out the ultrasound report from behind me, unable to hide my happiness. โ€œCarl, Iโ€™m pregnant!โ€
