Chapter 15
The conversation between Hayden and Sean abruptly ended. They had been discussing promotional plans for the new property when Joanna's unexpected suggestion startled them. An awkward silence filled the air.
Even without a marketing background, I knew celebrities and real estate weren't a natural fit. Celebrities were unlikely residents of this development; the idea seemed impractical.
"And this is...?" Sean asked pointedly, aware of Joanna's relationship with Hayden.
"Hello, Mr. Harnett. I'm Joanna, Mr. Parker's secretary," she replied eagerly, even before Hayden could speak.
Sean turned to Hayden, his eyes questioning. "Her… level? HR hired her!"
Joanna's smile faltered.
Hayden's expression was stern, but not angry. He had connections within Sears, and Joanna's comment clearly revealed her lack of awareness.
"She's new and still learning," Hayden explained casually. Then, his tone turning serious, he addressed Joanna: "If you don't understand, keep quiet and listen."
"Got it," Joanna mumbled, her eyes reddening. This was the first time Hayden had criticized her.
Sean, uncomfortable with the situation, scratched his nose. His gaze landed on me, a broad smile spreading across his face. "What's your take on this, Mrs. Parker?"
I flinched, wondering if he was trying to involve me. However, since he'd addressed me, I couldn't ignore him.
I approached with a smile. "Regarding the real estate promotion, why not incorporate an element of cultural heritage? Perhaps we could have a news station conduct interviews to raise the profile?"
Sean's eyes lit up, and he clapped his hands enthusiastically. "That's it! Playing up the cultural heritage would definitely pique curiosity. You're a genius!"
"You're laying it on thick," I replied with a grin, downplaying the compliment. I hadn't studied marketing formally, but having grown up hearing my father discuss such matters, it came naturally.
From the corner of my eye, I caught Joanna's withering glare.
Joanna lacked experience and had attended a mediocre college. She had been trying to impress, but her attempt had spectacularly backfired.
Damn Yvonne. She's even trying to steal the spotlight, Joanna cursed silently.
Nearby, several bystanders began whispering amongst themselves.
"Wow, it turns out Mrs. Parker has a knack for this. I heard she's amazing on the piano, too."
"Who said she's uneducated and incompetent? Rumors can be harmful."
"Did you see that? The mistress looks really upset. Even a recent graduate wouldn't dare say something like that."
Intrigued by their gossip and Hayden's potential reaction, I instinctively turned. To my surprise, I met his deep gaze. It seemed he had been watching me for some time.
