Chapter 118
"An issue with my file?" Cameron was momentarily stunned, but quickly understood Lena's meaning. This woman had apparently tried to access his personal file.
"That's right," Lena said, her gaze piercing. When someone couldn't be found in the records, there were usually two possibilities: First, Cameron might have entered the country illegally. Second, his file could be classified as a state secret. She leaned toward the latter, but until the first possibility was ruled out, she couldn't lower her guard.
"Colonel Bailey, isn't it improper to investigate someone's file without authorization?" Cameron raised an eyebrow.
"Hmph, I'm just doing my duty. I have every reason to suspect you!" Lena snorted coldly. "So, come with me. I have many questions."
Her gaze signaled Cameron to leave; discussing this in front of others would expose his identity. He found her consideration reasonable, and since the explanation wouldn't be lengthy, he agreed. "Alright, I'll go with you."
"Good." Lena nodded and headed toward the truck.
"Colonel Bailey, what has Cameron done wrong?" Dakota asked anxiously, having only caught Lena's mention of an incident.
Lena paused, noticing Dakota's anxiety. She was about to reassure her when Madison interjected maliciously:
"Dakota, do you need to ask Colonel Bailey? If Colonel Bailey personally arrested him, he must have committed a serious offense!"
Turning to Lena with a vindictive tone, she added, "Colonel Bailey, you must interrogate him thoroughly and rid society of this scum!"
"Yes, Colonel Bailey, don't let such social trash go unpunished! He'll endanger society!" Archie chimed in, his face filled with schadenfreude.
Dakota's face paled. How could they be so malicious?
"Ms. Jennings, don't blame us. Cameron did something shady. As public figures in Yrando, we must demand justice. Is there a problem with that?" Archie smirked, turning to Lena. "Colonel Bailey, thoroughly investigate him. He definitely has many problems!" He was eager to see Cameron imprisoned for a long time.
"Do you know him well?" Lena frowned.
"Not at all" Archie quickly denied it, needing to distance himself to avoid implication.
"Stop talking if you don't know him!" Lena glared.
Archie's mouth twitched; he'd better keep quiet. Lena was a colonel from the Capital Military Region; even Timothy treated her with respect. He certainly didn't want to be arrested.
Lena turned to Dakota. "Ms. Jennings, don't worry. I just have some questions for him."
"Dakota, I'll be fine. Head back, and I'll contact you later," Cameron said with a smile, then followed Lena into the truck.
The military green pickup truck slowly drove away. Dakota, worried, quickly followed, eager to know where Lena was taking Cameron.
Meanwhile, Laura and Peggy exited the hotel. Archie's eyes lit up; Laura's arrival was unexpected and opportune. His chance had come.
