197 Rooftop

Oliviaโ€™s POV

With a racing heart, I climbed the back stairs to the rooftop. Every part of me screamed against it. Even my wolf growled, warning me to turn backโ€”that something felt wrong, that whatever waited might be dangerous.

But I ignored it. Curiosity burned too deeply. What more could there possibly be? What else could hurt me that hasn't already?

When I pushed open the rooftop door and stepped out, the cold air hit me, and I exhaled deeply. My eyes darted around; the rooftop was empty. There was no one except me.

I exhaled slowly, tension crawling up my spine. Maybe it was a trap. Maybe they changed their minds. Maybeโ€”

But suddenly, I froze. There. She hadnโ€™t been there a second ago. I was sure of it. But suddenly, a woman stood at the edge of the rooftop. It was like she had justโ€ฆ appeared. One blink, and there she was, her long coat fluttering in the breeze. Her presence was chilling, as if the air itself bent around her.

I narrowed my eyes, my heart pounding harder.

โ€œWho are you?โ€ I asked, my voice trembling despite my desperate attempt to sound strong.

She didnโ€™t speak. She just stood there, her back turned to me. A chill ran through me. Something wasnโ€™t right.

I took a cautious step forward.

โ€œDid you send the letter?โ€ I asked again, louder this time.

Still, no answer. Thenโ€”so slowly it almost felt unrealโ€”she turned to face me. The second our eyes metโ€ฆ I stopped breathing. It was like staring into a mirror. She looked exactly like me, but an older version. Same eyes. Same face. Same curve of the mouth.

How can a total stranger and I have such resemblance? It was as if I was seeing my future self, twenty years hence. What in the worldโ€ฆ?

I staggered back, panicked.

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ who are you?โ€ I whispered.

She stared at me with an incomprehensible calmness, as if unsurprised to see me, as if sheโ€™d known I would come.

โ€œI wasnโ€™t supposed to meet you,โ€ she said softly. Her voice was like mineโ€ฆ but smoother, slower, older, somehow. โ€œBut I had to.โ€

My brows furrowed. โ€œWhat are you talking about? Who are you?โ€

She looked away, scanning the area as if watching for someone.

โ€œIโ€™m not permitted to tell you everything,โ€ she said carefully. โ€œJust this: no matter what happensโ€ฆ you must not leave this pack.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I snapped, stepping forward. โ€œWhy? Why shouldnโ€™t I leave? Why does everyone keep trying to trap me here?โ€

Her gaze returned to mine. โ€œBecause your safety lies hereโ€ฆ That is the main reason youโ€™ve been kept here all this while.โ€

I frowned and shook my head, my heart racing again. This was insane.

โ€œThis is a lie,โ€ I said firmly. โ€œThe triplets sent you, didnโ€™t they? They mustโ€™ve paid you to pull this little stunt. To get into my head. Make me doubt my decision. Manipulate me again.โ€

She didnโ€™t flinch. She didnโ€™t deny it. She just watched me, like she knew I wouldnโ€™t believe her.

โ€œI get it,โ€ I spat. โ€œThey think Iโ€™m stupid. That Iโ€™ll fall for this. But Iโ€™m not. So you can go back and tell themโ€”โ€

โ€œThey didnโ€™t send me,โ€ she said, sounding like she was speaking to an annoying child. โ€œAnd this is no stunt.โ€

Then she looked at me, truly looked at meโ€ฆ and there was pain in her eyes. Deep, endless pain.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Olivia,โ€ she said quietly. โ€œI wish I could tell you more. But Iโ€™ve already said too much.โ€

And just like thatโ€”before I could speak again, before I could even blinkโ€”she was gone. As if the wind had taken her with it.

For a moment, I couldnโ€™t move. My hands trembled, my mind still racing.

But before I could gather a single coherent thought, the door creaked open behind me. I turned sharply, my heart still pounding.

Alpha Damien stepped through, his eyes locking with mine. His brow furrowed as he strode closer, his gaze darting around the rooftop as if searching for something or someone.

โ€œWhy are you here?โ€ he asked, his voice low but laced with suspicion. โ€œWhat are you doing all alone?โ€

I hesitated.

โ€œI just needed air,โ€ I said quickly, trying to sound normal. โ€œEverything downstairs feltโ€ฆ suffocating.โ€

Damienโ€™s eyes narrowed, still scanning the space behind me.

โ€œYouโ€™re lying,โ€ he said, almost too quietly. โ€œYour scentโ€ฆ itโ€™s disturbed. And thereโ€™s something else. Something faint, but not yours.โ€

I stiffened. My wolf stirred uneasily.

โ€œAlpha Damien, Iโ€™m not in the mood,โ€ I muttered, trying to push past him.

But he stepped into my path, blocking me.

โ€œWho was here?โ€ he demanded, his voice sharper. โ€œOlivia. Tell me the truth.โ€

I met his gaze, trying to keep my expression neutral, even as my heart pounded wildly.

Should I tell him?

โ€œNo one,โ€ I said flatly.

His jaw clenched. He didnโ€™t believe me.

โ€œSomethingโ€™s wrong,โ€ he said, more to himself than to me. โ€œI can feel it.โ€

โ€œWell maybe something is wrong,โ€ I snapped, surprising even myself. โ€œBut not everything needs to be about you, Damien. Maybe Iโ€™m just tired. Maybe I just needed to be alone.โ€

He stared at me for a long moment. Then, softer: โ€œYouโ€™re shaking.โ€

I looked away. โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

He didnโ€™t press, but I noticed he wasnโ€™t believing me.

โ€œIf anything is going on,โ€ he said finally, โ€œI must know.โ€

I frowned. Of course. He thought one of the triplets had been here.

I lifted my chin and looked up at him.

โ€œI can take care of myself.โ€

That made him pause. His face tightened, but he didnโ€™t reply.

โ€œLetโ€™s go back,โ€ he said instead, seemingly not in the mood to argue. โ€œYouโ€™ve been up here long enough.โ€

I hesitated. I didnโ€™t want to go back to the party, but I had no choice. I had to keep up the act of being Alpha Damienโ€™s perfect girlfriend.

I forced myself to follow Alpha Damien down the stairs, my heart still pounding from what Iโ€™d seenโ€”or thought Iโ€™d seenโ€”on the rooftop.

By the time we reached the living room, the party was in full swing again. Music pulsed softly through the air, laughter and murmured conversations blending like perfume and smoke. The room felt tighter now, heavier.

Damien glanced down at me. โ€œIโ€™ll get us drinks,โ€ he said simply. โ€œPlease stay here.โ€ Without waiting for my reply, he turned and disappeared into the crowd.

I let out a slow breath, trying to calm my racing thoughts, but then I felt eyes on me. Two women approached, hate clearly written on their faces.

One leaned in, her voice syrupy and cruel. โ€œLook at her,โ€ she murmured loud enough for me to hear. โ€œAre you not ashamed, Olivia? Fucking your mateโ€™s uncle? Wasnโ€™t three Alphas enough for you, or did you have to try your luck with Tiger Uncle, too?โ€

My frown deepened. Anger bubbled inside me.

The other one snickered. โ€œSoon sheโ€™ll probably be spreading her legs for their father. Isnโ€™t that right, our dear Olivia? You just canโ€™t help yourself. Always hungry for moreโ€ฆโ€

I didnโ€™t let the words finish before a different kind of anger consumed me. Before I knew it, I grabbed her by the neck and pinned her to the nearest wall.

The music slowed. Conversations died. All eyes turned.

My grip tightened, my claws out, digging into her neck, causing blood to run down my fingers. People gasped, but I didnโ€™t care.

โ€œYou have no right to judge me,โ€ I said coldly, clearly, every word sharp with anger. โ€œYou know nothing about what Iโ€™ve been through. You havenโ€™t lived my life. You havenโ€™t carried my pain. You stand there with your perfect little smiles and your perfect little lies, acting as if youโ€™re betterโ€”when the truth is you couldnโ€™t survive a single day in my shoes.โ€

โ€œKill her.โ€ A voice whispered in my headโ€”a voice I hadnโ€™t heard before. A voice that was that of my wolf.

Gasps rippled around the room. The woman stiffened, her face paling, life draining from her.

โ€œShe will kill her.โ€ Worried voices spoke from behind, but I didnโ€™t let go, even though I wanted to.

โ€œOlivia, what are you doing?โ€ Damienโ€™s voice rang out sharply, thundering through the silence.

I ignored him. My claws were still embedded in the womanโ€™s neck, her blood warm on my fingertips. My breath came out in short, shaky bursts. I could feel my wolf howling beneath my skin, wild and hungry, begging for more.

โ€œLet her go,โ€ Damien said firmly, but not loudly. His voice was carefulโ€”controlledโ€”like I was a bomb about to explode.

โ€œI said let her go,โ€ he repeated, stepping closer, this time it was a command.

For a second, I didnโ€™t move. I couldnโ€™t. That voiceโ€ฆ the one inside meโ€ฆ it wasnโ€™t just my wolf. It was something darker. Something I hadnโ€™t heard before.

โ€œDo it,โ€ it whispered again. โ€œKill her. Let them all see what you really are.โ€

I blinked, and for a brief moment, I saw my reflection in the wide glass window nearby. Blood on my hands. Eyes glowing. A snarl on my lips.

Whatโ€ฆ am I becoming?

โ€œOLIVIA, you are killing her.โ€

With a growl, I shoved the woman away, watching as she crumpled to the floor, choking and coughing, hands trembling as she crawled backwards into her friendโ€™s arms.

The room was dead silent.
