Chapter 171

Now he had to explain himself to Sebastian, leaving no time to deal with Stephanie. Jackson left. Soon after, Jennifer entered. โ€œStephanie, did Mr. Hodge lose something? Doesnโ€™t it seem like heโ€™s trying to cheat you?โ€ Jennifer looked at everyone as if they were all trying to defraud Stephanie.

Stephanie replied, โ€œDo you think everyoneโ€™s like Catlin?โ€ Jennifer was silent, worried only about her boss. Their studio had been open for almost two years, and theyโ€™d never had so many visitors. Catlin had been dismissed yesterday, and today Jackson claimed something valuable was missing from Stephanieโ€™s office. Jennifer suspected someone was targeting her boss.

Stephanie continued, โ€œHe lost a ringโ€”judging by its quality, itโ€™s worth nearly three million.โ€ Jennifer was astonished. Could someone really be trying to scam Stephanie? Losing a million-dollar ring in the office? Jennifer would have assumed a scam if it werenโ€™t so blatant.

โ€œI have a feeling heโ€™s trying to swindle you, Stephanie. Donโ€™t be too naive.โ€

Stephanie retorted, โ€œDonโ€™t be so cynical, or youโ€™ll never get a boyfriend.โ€ Jennifer froze. Was that too cynical? she wondered. Who in their right mind would visit and lose something worth millions? It had to be intentional.

โ€œEnough about that, get me a cup of coffee,โ€ Stephanie commanded. Whether or not she was actually swindled, no one could easily deceive her. As long as she didnโ€™t try to scam anyone herself, that was all that mattered. Sebastian had gotten her drunk last night and given her a hard time; she was still slightly woozy. Jennifer nodded and left.

When Stephanie was alone, her phone buzzed incessantly. It was Sebastian. She answered, โ€œSebastian.โ€

โ€œHas Jackson left?โ€ his deep, somewhat intimidating voice asked.

โ€œYes, he left,โ€ Stephanie replied. If he didnโ€™t leave soon, would he come and peel his skin off? she wondered.

Sebastian asked, โ€œWhat about the bracelet?โ€

โ€œI returned it to him,โ€ Stephanie replied immediately. Thank goodness; judging by his tone, sheโ€™d be in serious trouble otherwise.

โ€œNow, what did I tell you?โ€ Sebastian pressed.

โ€œNever accept a manโ€™s gift. I didnโ€™t accept it,โ€ Stephanie replied quietly, a hint of sadness in her voice. Sensing Sebastianโ€™s seriousness, she quickly added, โ€œI really didnโ€™t accept it.โ€

โ€œGood girl,โ€ Sebastian said. Stephanie rolled her eyes. Is โ€˜good girlโ€™ still an appropriate term for me? she wondered.

โ€œDoes that mean Iโ€™ll never accept a manโ€™s gift? Iโ€™m all grown up now.โ€ Her tone was testing. Even though Sebastian had no other woman, she had matured. And after last nightโ€ฆ Just the thought made her cheeks flush. Although Sebastian claimed to remember nothing from last night, Stephanie wanted to test his intentions.

After she finished speaking, silence fell, and Stephanieโ€™s heart tightened. About five seconds later, Sebastian said, โ€œTell me, Stefi, how does it feel to keep a manโ€™s gift?โ€

โ€œHuh? Iโ€™ve never kept one!โ€ For heavenโ€™s sakeโ€”in all her years in Long Harbor, sheโ€™d never accepted a gift from a man.

โ€œDidnโ€™t I buy it for you?โ€ Sebastian pressed.

โ€œUmโ€ฆโ€ She was confused.

โ€œWhat does it feel like?โ€ he demanded.

Stephanie was speechless. The question was so abrupt she couldnโ€™t process it.
